RS800 every 3 seconds clicking

I have had the 800 unit for a few years now and last year i had to the replace batteries, the unit told me so, which i recall were only in there less than 3 years. We rarely get power outages here, and if we do its only a second or two. They are getting more frequent however and hence i thought it would be an idea to purchase such a unit.

Over the last few days the unit has been acting wierd. changing to battery use for a second then going back to mains. This has been happening more so in the morning and in the evenings. One could argue thats when the mains voltages are at the most changing, when more and more people are using power.

However when i got up this morning, the unit doesn't want to stay in power mode. It sits in battery mode, then every 3 seconds it will turn back to mains ( click, i assume the relay ) then back to battery.

After reading the manual i checked on the sensitivity and after trying all 3 settings the only one that actually makes the unit work as it should is setting 1, which states however do not use for computer work. I bought the unit for computer work.

I have checked the mains voltage and it is 243 - 248v well within all the parameters of the 3 settings. Thus i can only assume the actual sensitivity sensor is dead/dying.

Given the information stated above, would you conclude the same or have another alternative?

Assuming it is the sensor, is such a device replaceable and can i purchase it? price / location?

Hello!

I have around 6 BR900's in use. Over the past few years, around 25% of the units have failed exactly as you describe. New, the unit will work fine, even on high sensitivity. As the unit deteriorates and starts switching to battery more and more often from "noise", the sensitivity can be changed to medium, which will temporarily fix things. After more deterioration, the unit needs to be switched to low sensitivity, which will help for a period of time. Finally, the unit will start doing the battey "dance", even on low sensitivity, which means it is time for the recycle bin.

Note that a any point during this slow road to death, plugging in a new BR900 to the exact same outlet with the exact same load will solve the "problem", even on high sensitivity. Putting a new battery in a failing unit makes no difference. Replacement units have run on the same outlet/load as the failed units for long periods of time without showing any sensitivity issues. I can only surmise that this is a hardware problem of some sort.

There is a possibility that the Back-UPS being continously effected by these levels of total harmonic distortion could eventually ware down components, which may result in the symptom reappearing after sometime.

You may want to contact your electrical company to come and investigate. You/ They could potentially place a meter on the line to try and capture some of the noise that the UPS sees.
