Hello all. I was recently given the task of checking the status of our old UPS 650's.
The first thing I was told to do, by apc tech support, was to unplug all load connections. Then perform a battery charge, which took 8-10 hours. Once the charging was completed, I was told to plug a "small load" into the UPS and unplug the UPS from the wall outlet.
I did that and was told the battery should keep the small load powered. It did not power the fan(small load) for even 1 second. The UPS then emitted a steady tone until I either turned off the UPS or plugged it back into the wall.
Does this mean my battery is "toast"? Thank you in advance for your time and assistance.

Model # BK650MUS
Serial # BG024516432
I believe the unit is around 8 years.
The battery has never been replaced. At least, there is no record of it.
The LED indicators? There are none. There is a green light on the power switch on the front of machine. That is the only light anywhere on the machine. If I remove the load on the unit and then unplug it, I get a single beep every 5 seconds or so.
3-5 years? Yikes, I think I mgith just have a battery issue!

Based from the serial number your unit was manufactured on the 45th week of 2002 and that makes it 8 years old already. The battery for this UPS is RBC4 and the single beep every 5 second indicates that the UPS is on battery. Unfortunately the one that you have cannot support the load anymore, it goes to overload when loads are attached.
Considering the age of your UPS, we can also suggest that you look into trading up your old unit and get the most updated UPS thru the APC TradeUPS program. It works like, you'll trade-in your old unit and we would give you the maximum VA capacity that you can purchase. On top of that, there is going to be a discount on the UPS that you've opted to buy and we'll take care with the disposal of your old one.

Thank you for the response. I am familiar with the TradeUPS option. That seems like a good idea.
My employer would like to simply replace the dead battery. If you are saying the UPS itself cannot support that load does this mean a new battery would not help?
The single beep only occured when there was not load connected and the UPS was unplugged from wall outlet.
Also, the serial number tells you the year first, then the week? 0245 means '02, week 45? Thanks again. You have been extremely helpful.
Paul

I agree with Clarkson. If you are going to purchase APC batteries they are covered with 1 year warranty. If you opted for TradeUPS the next UPS of yours might have a 2 or 3 year warranty for both the UPS and the battery that came with it.
