RS 800 flashing lights then it stops

I have an RS 800 that has been working great for many years (maybe 5 or so). This morning I woke up and found that three of the lights on the front panel (On Battery, Overload and Replace Battery) were flashing while the On-Line light was lit. The UPS was also making an odd sort of soft beeping/clicking sound. The Mac Pro connected to the UPS was still powered and working fine.

I thought that my 16 month old son might have pressed the On/Off button so I shut the computer down and turned off the UPS. I let it sit for about 10 minutes then powered the UPS back on while leaving everything connected to it off. I figured maybe the battery needed to be recharged.

I left it in this condition all day and earlier tonight I powered on the computer and everything was fine (no flashing lights or soft beeps). We went out for dinner and when I came back, the UPS was doing its flashing/beeping routine again and, just like this morning, the connected computer was working fine.

In the middle of searching this forum to see if this was happening to anyone else, the flashing/beeping stopped and everything is back to normal.

I'm figuring that this is pretty much the signs that the UPS is in its death throes however I can't seem to find anyone with the exact same symptoms. Can I get by just replacing the battery or do I need to replace the entire unit??

Thanks!

Hi Jon,

The Online LED was lit and solid the whole time.

So if it's a battery charger warning, as you suggest, what does that mean to me?

Thanks!!

-Bryan

It can either be a hardware or firmware issue with the UPS. There are times wherein the UPS drops the load, this could indicate that the unit is faulty and needs to be replaced. If the issue doesn't clear after doing a power cycle and the LED's doesn't clear then the unit needs to be replaced. If the unit is still within warranty and it shows you that symptom again feel free to contact the APC Technical Support.
