Back-UPS 750G
Vista Home Premium
Vista software for Power Chute Personal Edition
Neither Windows nor the pc will shutdown; choosing shutdown in Vista only triggers a reboot.
setup:
Master: Dell Inspiron 530
other Battery Backup + Surge Protection:
Viewsonic E50B 15" CRT
Maxtor OneTouch external hard drive
Viewsonic G220fb 21" CRT
Dell/Altec Lansing subwoofer
Surge Protection only:
Brother HL-1540 laser printer
Epson Perfection 1250 scanner
desk light
I have never used Sleep or Hibernation, and before setting up Back-UPS today never had a shutdown problem.
Thanks for your assistance.

Problem solved, apparently.
A helpful young man on the phone had me:
1. Change Sensitivity from High to Medium in PCPE
2. Turn Master Enable off on the 750G
Now Shutdown shuts down.
I turn the computer off at night and sometimes leave it off for days when I'm doing other things. Whatever produces a "graceful" exit if the power goes off I'll try---as long as "shutdown" still shuts down.
Thanks for your input. I'm open to any suggestions that fit with my use of this Vista desktop system.

If the system only reboots when you select shutdown for the Operating System, then there's a larger problem having nothing to do with the UPS and PCPE.
However, there is information available for configuring Hibernation in Vista, which should help some.

Thanks for your response.
I've now shut off hibernation with the cmd script you directed me to (thanks). I'll see what a shutdown attempt produces. Having to leave the machine on last night, I saw, when I hit the spacebar this morning, that it had gone into a type of suspend state that I've never seen before.
Last night I went through Vista's Power Options and told everything I could find to shutdown. I read in another post's reply that PCPE uses hibernation by default. True? If so, and I can't get it to shutdown, then PCPE is gone---unfortunately, because I like the features it offers. As much as I dislike Vista, it never gave me this problem prior to setting up 750G and Power Chute yesterday.

Hibernation is the ideal option for graceful shutdown in the event of an outage. Hibernation will save the exact state of your computer to its hard disk and restore the PC back to this state whenever the user turns it back on.
The other option is a standard shutdown that preserves nothing. All unsaved work, open applications, etc would be lost.
