I have Back-UPS X S 1300 surge protector
Model: BX1300LCD
Serial: 3B0852X17278
I was going to replace the battery on the unit but then i saw this:
There was nothing coming out of the cracks and the housing was clean, although it smelt a tinge of ozone.
Would it be safe to stick to my original plan and just replace the battery? Or are there other concerns i should have with the unit?
Thank you for your input.

My experience as another end user, not affiliated with APC, is that you can generally get one battery replacement on these smaller UPS models* before you need to replace the whole UPS. You can often extend this to multiple battery replacements if you (not supported or encouraged by APC) adjust the float voltage. In my experience, the smaller UPS models tend to drift out of calibration to the high side, which causes overcharging of the batteries and reduces their life.
I believe (but APC has neither confirmed nor denied this, as far as I know) that this is why APC discontinued their "Charge-UPS" program which provided a new battery pack and extended the warranty on the existing UPS. They still offer the batteries (without UPS warranty extension) and the "Trade-UPS" program which lets you exchange your whole UPS system for a new model with (of course) new batteries.
* The small UPS market is very competitive and I can't blame them for building the models to a certain price point. Their larger UPS models don't seem to have the same issue - I have Matrix and Symmetra models here that are over 15 years old and still have a proper float voltage. Of course, they are a LOT more expensive.
