sua1000rm2u Problem

Hi - I purchased a Smart UPS 1000 rackmount unit (sua1000rm2u) new in 2003.  It ran fine up through ~2008 until it started intermittently shutting down where the unit would suddenly drop the load & simultaneously flash all 6 front panel LEDs.  I chalked it up to a bad battery & removed it from service... up until a few months ago.  I just ordered a brand new APC RBC, installed it, and thought things were good to go.  However, the same intermittent 'all LED flashing' problem has resurfaced.  Sometimes it'll run fine for weeks, sometimes hours.  POST passes and the unit seems to run fine.  I haven't tried connecting via Powerchute as the UPS normally just runs solo... but will try to login to it tonight and see if there are any logs.

Does anyone know what it means when all 6 LEDs are flashing?  Or than 'internal fault'?  I'm wondering if one of the AVR relays has gone bad and the unit is locking up when the AVR kicks in.  Just speculation...

We had a power outage today while I was away.  I took a look at the logs and the UPS maintained the load for 90 minutes before shutting down.  What I thought was more interesting was that it appears there was a brown out for over an hour & the AVR was boosting (I assume) the line voltage levels - no problem.  Which makes me think even more that my internal fault is with the high 'cut' AVR relay section, as it seems as though it handled today's brown out w/o issue (other than running out of battery reserve).

No luck on the PowerChute logs.

PCBE over USB cannot find the UPS, even though Win7 sees the UPS and install drivers.

PCBE over serial, the UPS shuts down immediately when the serial cable is connected to the laptop.  One beep, drops load and powers off.  Will not turn back on until the serial cable is disconnected.

That sounds like you have the wrong cable (APC is known for their "creative" pinouts). The classic serial cable is a 940-0024 (possibly followed by a letter). I don't know if that is the right cable for your model (I haven't been following APC models in the last few years), but a straight-through or crossover serial cable is definitely not the right cable.

Hi,

All of the LED flashing indicates an internal fault and since it continually happens the UPS should be replaced. You could send it out for repair depending on where you live but based on the age (13 years) my recommendation is to replace it with a new SMT1000 Smart-UPS.

I managed to gain access to the logs, but they unfortunately provide little info to diagnose the internal fault.  I built a new Windows Server 2003 instance, connected to the UPS over USB to it, using PCBE 9.0.3.604.  Believing that the AVR relays are causing the fault, I changed the "Power Quality Sensitivity" setting from High to Low... and haven't had a single fault/outage since.... where I was seeing one or more per day.  The unit is maintaining the load during a power outage just fine... it seems to just be acting up when the AVR kicks in.
