I now have my old smt2200i sat in the corner as it will not charge batteries, it is reading the battery voltage 7v higher than it actually is (confirmed) and I would like to track down the offending part, swap it and try and get this expensive lump of metal functioning again.
I know APC will not supply this information as I may be daft enough to electrocute myself or set the house on fire but I was wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction?
Thanks.

Appreciate your willingness to continue. I told that because I too had a similar story repairing one online UPS. At first I tried to find the fault, brought many soldering irons to match the melting point then brought some components. After several days of soldering works decided to get it repaired from he authorized service centre. Took it there with lot of effort as its very heavy. Sadly after days they told to take it back as they can't repair and need to whole board replacement which they quoted 80% of unit price. Almost 1 month went away with that UPS interrupting work and finally decided to pack it up and buy new one.
Best of luck for you.

Don't waste time on repairing damaged UPS. Its much hard to find the fault and correct. Firstly the exact component is hard to get then the power board is soldered with high melting point solder which is hard to get melted using normal soldering iron. If the problem was simple fuse blown, wear and tear push button switch etc then its easy but correcting rectifier, inverter circuits is hard and doing so might end in whole UPS failure due to electrostatic discharge, shorting and personnel injury as it contain high voltage points in several places, lead and other contaminants etc. Anyway its always better you buy new one rather than wasting time, money and effort on damaged items. Most UPS which are replaced is like this, due to some simple problem like battery not charging, input supply not detecting etc though all others working fine but repairing at low cost is not easy as most of these Online UPS are manufactured and imported directly from manufacturing units in China and service technicians are not much trained to repair and they can only do whole board replacement which almost cost the total cost of UPS itself.

Thanks prince but I do not want that sort of reply.
I have replaced it and would now like to fix it, as for the solder it will not beat my solder station I can assure you, it is a professional unit. I am not just some home user I am an engineer who doesn't like throwing things out unless he has to.
