Hello,
i got a SMT1000i and tried to run it with openSUSE Linux 13.1 with apcupsd
USB is working, but serial not.
From the past i know the SUA1000i models, they are running with serial cable.
Is this model SMT1000i suitable for Linux?
Does anyone have this running with serial connection and apcupsd?
Best regards

Ok, so your UPS should be upgradable.
1.) You'll need to pursue upgrading your UPS and enabling Modbus via serial. So I suggest you go to How do I update the firmware of my SMT, SMX, or SMC series Smart-UPS? | FAQs | Schneider Electric US and then utilize the Firmware Upgrade Wizard there to get the UPS upgraded to at least 9.0.
2.) 3.14.11 or higher has the Modbus protocol support so you'll also need to update that after you get your UPS upgraded.

For SMT/SMX UPS models, you can only use serial with apcupsd if the UPS supports Modbus and you enable it. That is what apcupsd uses to talk to the UPS.
Here is some information on the Modbus implementation -> www.apc.com/whitepaper/?an=176
The short answer is that we'll need to see if we can upgrade your UPS, enable Modbus, then make sure you get the version of apcupsd that supports talking Modbus.
Edit I forgot to tell you, in order to update the UPS, can you tell me what firmware version is on the UPS right now? It should be something like UPS 09.0 or similar and when you view the firmware, you'll like see an ID somewhere, like UPS 09.0 (ID13). I need to know what that is. Then, we go to How do I update the firmware of my SMT, SMX, or SMC series Smart-UPS? | FAQs | Schneider Electric US and proceed accordingly. The problem is, not all UPS models have implemented Modbus support yet..
