Hi,
I am seeing a red "replace battery" light on my Smart-UPS RT 10000 XL. The unit actually power cycled yesterday morning with the messages in bold (the date is obviously wrong = 11/09/2002= Jan 6 2014.
11/09/2002 | 06:35:42 | UPS: The output power is now turned on. |
11/09/2002 | 06:35:38 | UPS: The output power is turned off due to a low battery. |
10/31/2002 | 20:32:36 | UPS: Failed a self-test. |
10/17/2002 | 20:33:20 | UPS: Failed a self-test. |
10/17/2002 | 20:33:05 | UPS: At least one faulty battery exists. |
10/17/2002 | 20:33:04 | UPS: A faulty battery no longer exists |
Obviously it's my priority to replace the batteries. Why would it power cycle though? Do I run the risk of this happening again before I can get batteries replaced? As I understand it the replacement batteries come in twos, so I would need 2xRBC44 to replace the batteries in the "Battery Pack", is that correct?
IF i want to determine which of the batteries is bad, should I remove one RBC44 and perform a self-test? This system is critical and I'd much rather just replace all batteries, thus avoiding down time. That should be possible?

Hello again.
Yes, you're right - the default setting is every two weeks for a self test but that can be modified. You'd see that option under Diagnostics in your Network Management Card.
If you just have "SURT10000XLT" then you just need qty (2) RBC44 which are the physical (4) strings that go inside the UPS itself. Sounds like since today is 11/9 according to your log, that the next self test would be around the 13th of November in your log..? (I am bad at math - lol )

If the batteries are very far gone (AKA "toast"), it is feasible that the output turned off during the self test. In your data log, what does the battery voltage show - normally and during the self test period? A self test failure/replace battery indicator normally should give you about a month's leeway before the batteries fail but factors can affect that (ambient temperature, battery health/quality, other environmental factors, etc) so this is not typical for it to drop a load after a self test in most circumstances.
And the SURT10000XLI or SURT10000XLT both take qty (2) RBC44 as you suggested for the UPS itself. If you have any SURT192XLP's with it, they also take qty (2) RBC44 each (per Buy APC Smart-UPS RT 192V Battery Pack - Technical Specifications and Information | APC). It is always recommended to replace all of the batteries at the same time if they are the same age. This UPS cannot identify individual strings that are faulty anyway so it is telling you to replace the (2) RBC44's. Putting new RBC44's with old RBC44's would damage the newer ones too - bad batteries typically damage new ones if put on to the same bus.
Hope that helps. Let me know if you have further questions or need clarification. I'd recommend replacing all the RBC44's ASAP to avoid further issues during the next self test or during a power event.

Hi,
Thanks for the quick reply. The last self test was 10/31, but I seen no indication of one yesterday. As I understand it, it self tests every two weeks?
Battery voltage shows:
Battery | |||
Capacity: | 100.0 % | ||
Battery Voltage: | 216.0 VDC | ||
External Batteries: | 1 | ||
My entire unit looks like this - http://www.apc.com/products/resource/include/techspec_index.cfm?base_sku=SURT10000XLT - thus I do not have any other SURT192XLP's right? I just have the 2xRBC44's that come in the "Battery Pack" part of the unit as you can see on the link. Or is there also RBC44's inside the actual UPS too?
