I have a 3000XLM with two external battery packs and a network card installed from the factory. My problem is everytime I access the card throught the serial connection the UPS shuts down. I would like to know what cause's of this problem. I have been successful accessing the card's serial connection is other UPS's.

are you definitely using the APC serial cable? it has a non-standard pinout and using a standard serial cable can cause this, depending on the type.
you need to make sure the cable you're using has the part number of 940-0024 or 940-1524 engraved on either ends of the connectors. if you are using the correct cable, make sure none of the pins are damaged on either end of the cable, the computer serial port, or the UPS itself.
