graceful shutdowns to server, and VMs with an APC Smart-UPS 1000VA LCD RM 2U 120V (SMT1000RM2U)

Hi guys,

This is my first post here. Well, I bought an SMT1000RM2U and it came without the SmartSlot card. I'm building my home lab, in which I'll have many virtual machines (VMs) working on VMware Workstation over Windows Server 2012 R2. Likewise, I'd like to monitor my UPS using my network monitoring software (via SNMPv3) in order to get alerts on my phone in case anything wrong happens. In case of a long outage, I want the UPS shutdowns my server with my VMs.

With this being said, let me ask you these questions:

1. Do I have to buy an AP9617, AP9630 or AP9631 card? What is the main difference between them?

2. Can I use any USB cable, like a printer USB cable, so I can have the PowerChute Business Edition connected to my device?

3. Can I use a Cisco serial cable (DB0 RS-232 console cable) to manage this device?

4. Can I add another UPS bank of batteries to this device?

5. What is the power consumption of this device without load and the batteries 100% charged? It says "Load Energy 0.006KWh", and I think is 6W per hour, but I'm not sure if this is the device power consumption. Like I said, it's a lab environment and I don't want let it connected the whole day if its power consumption is high.

Thank you so much beforehand for your responses,

Ricardo

Thank you so much for the info. I've talked with a customer support last week, but again your input is just the same.

Have a great day!

If you would like to monitor the UPS over your LAN you should purchase either the AP9630 or AP9631. The AP9617 is not compatible with a SMT Smart-UPS. The difference between the AP9630 and AP9631 is the AP9631 offers environmental monitoring. The AP9630 does not. Yes. The SMT1000RM2U has a standard USB port.

No. The UPS has is own Serial cable. Part number 940-0625
