If I set Runtime to "Preserve Battery Power" and select shutdown my computer when it has been on battery power for 5 minutes.

1)  The computer hibernates which is not shutdown

2)  And it does not power off the UPS, why?

Hi,

When the PC is in hibernation it is off. You must restart the PC for it to come back on line. The reason PCPE hibernates the PC is to save an open files and applications so that when the PC is restarted the system is restored to the previous state. Example: you have a word doc. When the system is restarted the word doc will be opened to the state is was in when the PC shut down. Any unsaved changes will be present.

If you do not want the PC to hibernate you can change the shutdown option. Open a command prompt as an admin and run the command powercfg.exe /hibernate off The next time PCPE start the shutdown process the UPS will not hibernate it will power off.

As for the UPS, when PCPE start to OS shutdown the UPS should wait 2 minutes and then power off. If AC has been restored within those 2 minutes the UPS will cut output power, wait 5 to 6 seconds and then restore AC to the battery protected outlets.

I have a router connected to power protected port as well as the pc running Powerchute PE, it hibernated the PC as you stated, but the UPS never cut power to the router.  That is not "Preserving battery power".

Hi,

On the Back-UPS there are 2 different outlet types. Battery / Surge protected and Surge Protected. When the UPS powers off if AC is still available the Surge Portected outlets are not powered off only the BAttery / Surge outlets are powered off. You should verify the router is plugged into the Battery / Surge protected outlet. If it is and AC is not cut to the Battery / Surge outlet after PCPE commands the UPS down you should contact local support for assistance.

regardless of where the router is plugged in, if the UPS shuts down to "preserve battery power", both of the outlet types on the UPS should be shut off.  You misunderstood my post.

The Back-UPS has 2 separate outlet groups as mention earlier. There are outlets that are protected by the battery and have surge protection. Those outlet will provide battery back up power when AC is lost. There are surge only outlets that provide surge protection when AC is available. When AC is lost the  surge only outlets are power off. Only the Battery + Surge outlet draw power from the battery when the UPS is running on battery. The surge only outlet do not draw power from the battery at any time. 

When the UPS is off the Battery + Surge outlets do not provide power to the load however the surge only outlets will continue to provide AC assuming AC is available to the UPS.

let's simplify my dilemna a little.  All my stuff is plugged into battery + surge, i set Powerchute to "Preserve Battery" after 5 minutes of run time, powerchute hibernates the p.c. but never turns off the UPS; the router is still powered on.... why?  That is not preserving battery power.

No, that is not preserving battery power. The UPS should kill output to the battery + surge outlet a few minutes after the PC is commanded down. If it is not you should contact local support for assistance.

I would expect the screen on the back-ups to go dark and the router to be power disrupted.
