What does Warning State: Charger mean?

I just installed a new set of batteries in my Smart-UPS 2200. The unit came right back up with no prompts and it says the batteries are at 100% charge but it keeps flashing Warning State: Charger. What does this mean and what do I need to do to fix it?

Hi Liam,

Just a follow up, I performed the brain dead procedure on my UPS. When it came back up this time it performed the self-test I was previously expecting after I originally changed the batteries. The self-test passed and it no longer displays the error message. Thanks again for your help.

Hi Rob,

It sounds like you may have a charger fault. Do you have the exact model and serial number of your unit? If you are using Powerchute or a Network management card could you attach the event logs?

It may be easier to troubleshoot this issue with your local tech support team, but if you want to continue via forum posts I'll do my best.

Thanks

Liam

Hi Liam,

My model name is: Smart-UPS 2200

My Serial Number is: IS1209002314

I don't run Powerchute and it's not connected to the network. This is a small home office network, five computers and a few smaller devices attached. With everything turned on right now it's running at 28% load. The battery charge reads 100%.

If you can give me an answer based on this information that would be great. Otherwise, let me know how to contact my local tech support team. This is the second one of these UPS models that I've run over the past 16 years and I've never had to contact tech support before.

Hi Rob,

There should be a specific model number on it. If you have an LCD screen it would be in the "About" menu. If you dont have an LCD screen it would be a white label either on the back of he unit or behind the front bezel. It will be something like "SMT2200" or "SUA2200RM2U". We probably have a dozen different "Smart-UPS 2200" units...

Realistically the troubleshooting is going to be pretty similar. I would perform a "Brain Dead" on the UPS:

  • Turn off the UPS
  • Unplug it from Utility power
  • Disconnect the batteries
  • Was a few seconds
  • Reconnect the batteries, plug back in, turn back on

If the message returns it is likely a bad charger and the UPS will need to be replaced. This unit is 8 years old, and typical lifespan is around 10 years, so it wouldn't be entirely unexpected. I'm not sure what country you are in, but if you go to apc.com and choose "Support" then "Contact US" you should be able to find contact info for both telephone and live chat. Your unit is well out of warranty, but our support team will try their best regardless.

Thanks,

Liam

Hi Liam,

The LCD screen calls this the UPS Part No. It's an SMT2200. I'll try the brain dead thing and see what happens. Thanks for your help.
