Been quite a while since on this Forum - a good thing! However, my SURT6000XLT was recently brought out of storage for a new service and would not boot up. The fault light flashed in sync with a chirp about 1 second apart continuously, both on battery and power. Did all the cold start and brain dead starts to no avail. As it turns out, one of the 12 volt batteries in one of the cages was totally dead. Upon replacement, it now seems to work fine - with all the "serial port" tests OK. Have not recalibrated the battery charge system, but don't really want to until a new set of batteries are installed. Just wondering if the original problem (with the fault light and chirp continuously cycling) indicated any future problems that I might have with this unit. It is about 10 years old, but looks like new and has not been in service much at all! I know it will need all new batteries to be put into service - and will do that when I get the money! Meanwhile, I can install the network card and do more complete diagnostics - would that be necessary?
Thanks for any comments,

The unit will chirp and not turn on if the DC bus is below 168v. Thats about 10v each battery. But if you found a bad battery and replaced it with a fresh 14volt battery that could have been enough to get above that 168volt line and restart. Its kind of like jump-starting a car.
Now once running, the UPS will charge up old batts as best as it can and the unit will seem great. But pull the plug on the UPS with a decent load and your ups will probably turn off right away.
Remember its nearly impossible for you or the UPS to know if a battery is bad unless it puts a load on them.
