Hi folks,
I got a new Petrol Generator. I'm trying to connect to to my UPS systems in my house. The generator is supposed to have an AVR in it...
I have 4 UPS in the house. 2 are the step approximated type (one tower style and one rack style), 2 are the pure sine wave type (one tower style and one rack style).
Depending on how much I load the generator, some of the UPS's will constantly flick between battery and power..
However, one of my pure sine wave rack units hasn't caused any problems at all (stays on generator power constatly)
Any ideas?
Thanks

thanks for your help.
my next question is a little off topic. With my generator, my lights flicker a bit. Would something like the APC Line-R help this?
I have a feeling that this generator has a crappy AVR in it...

the only thing you can do in this situation is really lower the sensitivity on the unit if available. you can do this on standby UPSs (step approx sine wave) as well as line interactive UPSs. if you have a double online conversion UPS, it doesnt have a sensitivity setting due to its topology.
if the voltage/frequency is out of range, and lowering the sensitivity doesnt help, the only thing to do would be to clean up the power on the generator end.
if you can tell me a little bit more about specific models you have, i can tell you how to change the sensitivity if you dont have the software available.
on most Smart UPS (line interactive), you can change the sensitivity on the UPSs on the back via a little LED/switch. on certain Back UPSs, you can change it via the front switch with the UPS off. I can elaborate on that though if you need help depending on the models you have.

thanks for your reply.
I did some searching online and came to the conclusion as yourself.
I have:
2 X Smart-UPS (These are my 2 pure sine wave ones)
1 X Back-UPS CS 650
1 X Powerstack 450
I have found how to change the sensitivity on the first 3 but have no idea on the powerstack.
Cheers

hmm..
[found the manual here|http://www.apcmedia.com/salestools/ASTE-6Z8L9U_R0_EN.pdf] but it didnt mention it either. i am assuming you'd need to do it through the software since it doesnt have the button on the back.

Just another note, is it bad for the servers to run them off my noisey generator. My generator has an AVR in it however obviously it's still a very crappy waveform..
Is there such a thing that can protect the servers' PSUs from being damaged? (Something like a noise filter maybe)?
Thanks

the UPS should not pass through anything that is THAT bad. if anything, it will go on battery still if the power is not acceptable.

yes, it wouldnt let anything really bad get through that is outside of the tech specs on the webpage for the UPS.
