UPS Without Power Chute

I am curious as to what occurs if one uses an UPS without the USB connection to the computer and without the Power Chute software...but with the computer plugged into the UPS? In case of power failure I assume the UPS takes over but that one would manually have to save their work, close apps, and shut down the computer manually?
