UPS: Turned off due to a low battery

My SmartUPS 1500 RM restarted tonight with the following relevant messages in eventlog:

05/06/2013 04:49:25 UPS: Turned on.

05/06/2013 04:49:20 UPS: Turned off due to a low battery.

05/03/2013 16:02:45 UPS: Passed internal self-test.

05/03/2013 16:02:29 UPS: Bad battery condition cleared.

I changed the battery pack last week, and therefore the bad battery condition was cleared and passed the self-test. Suddenly the UPS turned itself off at 04:49 and started again. Does anyone have an idea why? UPS is running with 25% load, 27V battery voltage, 18 min runtime and brand new battery pack.

Is this log from a UPS Network Management Card? If so, could you please provide the full event.txt, data.txt, and config.ini logs from it for review please? Instructions on doing that are in the knowledge base @ http://www.apc.com/site/support/index.cfm/faq/ and search for article ID FA156131.

Also, when you replaced the battery, did you do a runtime calibration or anything? Does 18 minutes sound normal? I am wondering though if you've seen it last the full 18 minutes since replacing the battery.

The firmware on your management card seems really old so I cross checked the event IDs to what they are worded as today:

UPS: The output power is turned off. = on your system's event log: UPS: Turned off due to a low battery.

UPS: The output power is now turned on. = on your systems event log: UPS: Turned on.

Anyway, unfortunately, I see no reason why this happened unfortunately after finding the better event descriptions. No logins are recorded during this time to verify if someone logged in and did it (if not yourself) and there are no events logged before or immediately after that show the reason for the reboot. The only other thing that comes to mind is that someone scheduled the reboot via the management card. Since the firmware is so old, I am not sure if those "scheduling" events would show but on the newer firmwares, it would say "started a scheduled shutdown" or similar. Plus, you probably would've mentioned that wink

The other big question is: did the UPS actually turn on and off and cut the power? Or did it just log that it did?

I suggest we upgrade the firmware on the management card to make sure we get the most up to date management card firmware and logging capabilities and see if it happens again. the only other thing it could be I suppose is the actual UPS.

Can you verify the model/firmware version of the management card you have? It appears to be an AP9617/18/19 and I am going to guess an early 1.0 firmware or similar. Then we can get you upgraded using the correct method (if you're willing to and can).
