Hi, this is a clearly a noob question - but I've googled it and can't work out the answer...
We've got 5 servers on our UPS, setup with Network Management and PCNS. I'd like to test that all the servers will respond to the shutdown command when sent - without actually pulling out the mains plug.
If I go to the Network Management interface->Control->Outlet Group Control and choose 'Shutdown Immediately' for the outlet group, will that send a shutdown command to the servers, or just switch the power off instantly?
Is there an easy way to test the shutdown process? (I've read posts that suggest configuring each client to shut down when the network connection to the UPS is lost, then pulling the network cable - but that seems clunky and doesn't really test what I need!)
Many thanks
-Mat Draper

Hi,
Yes, the NMC will allow you to power the outlet groups back up when the test is completed.

Hi,
To test the shutdown you can go to Control - UPS - Turn off UPS Outlet Groups and be sure to select Signal PowerChute Network Shutdown Clients and do not select Skip outlet off delays. you should also verify the outlet off delay per outlet group are configure properly to allow enough time for the computers to power down.

It worked! Many thanks Bill. Although our Synology NAS connected via USB did not power down within the 5 minute limit - and got it's power pulled when the UPS switched off. Hopefully if it detects that the UPS is 'on battery' it will respond properly. I will next test by pulling the plug...
Regards
-Mat

I will be testing the shutdown procedure also, so thanks for this post! I have another noob question, after I click to "Turn Off UPS Outlet Groups" and the testing is done, how will I turn this outlet group back on to go back to normal operations?
I'm assuming the menu options on this screen will change to turn the outlet group back on? I just wanted to ask beforehand. Thanks in advance!
