UPS Network Management card 2 SMTP failure with O365

Hello,

I have a UPS Network Management Card 2 and i'm trying to setup SMTP notifications with O365 but I have been unsuccessful so far. I have tried everything on this microsoft document https://support.office.com/en-us/article/how-to-set-up-a-multifunction-device-or-application-to-send...

This is the Test notifications results.

I have replaced the email address for censoring purposes.

Last Test Result: (testemail@domain.com) Test e-mail failed; SMTP configuration error.
Last Server Response: 220 2.0.0 SMTP server ready

Hi Kyle,

The firmware you gave me is from the UPS, not the NMC itself. I can tell from the screenshot of the NMC though the firmware on it is indeed a little older (since we've changed the UI in newer revs) so I recommend that you upgrade and retry. We made changes and updates to SSL/TLS email authentication that I think will benefit you here for Office 365. I think that is why it is failing. Let's try that next and see if any change post-upgrade.

You can get the latest firmware (6.5.6) for AP9630/31/35 in a Smart-UPS here (which I can tell it is a Smart-UPS based on the firmware you did provide)-> http://www.apc.com/shop/us/en/products/UPS-Network-Management-Card-v6-5-6-Firmware-for-Smart-UPS-Gal... (I suspect you are on 6.2.1 or earlier if you look under About->Network in the web UI.

(which, we have a new 6.6.4 coming in a matter of days, just  FYI.)

If you need any help applying the upgrade, please check here for available methods: http://www.apc.com/us/en/faqs/FA156047

Hi Kyle,

I have a few questions/thoughts:

  • What firmware, especially AOS version is on your NMC2? We added TLS 1.2 for newer AOS versions which I think is required for this to work.
  • Did this ever work?
  • Can you share what settings you're using on the network management card side, specifically for Authentication mode - None, If Supported, Always, or Implicitly?
    • For my O365 setup, "Always" seems to work and be required.

For the rest, I am using smtp.office365.com, port 587. Then my email as the to/from address since I believe the "From Address" in the NMC needs to be a valid account as opposed to some dummy/made up address which I don't have control in our environment to create. For authentication, we have another username beyond the email within our domain to use, not sure if you have something similar.

This is a new UPS and is being setup for the first time. The firmware is the following: UPS 09.1(ID20)

Yes in the setup i had set TLS to always and on port 587. The account i was testing with is a legitimate mailbox and has a valid license for sending/receiving mail. I have the same from Address email that is under authentication.
