Surge protection and SMT1500i

Hi,
on wikipedia I read:
" Well-designed surge protectors should not rely on MOVs to absorb surge energy, but instead to survive the process of harmlessly redirecting it to ground."
As far as I know SMT1500i should work like this, so why you have only 479 jouls in the specs?
What does it means?
If it redirect the excessive current to the ground, does this means that it have "infinite" protection?
If it isn't inifinite but good, why only 479 joules?

Hi Davide -

I apologize for the delay. You can find a good explanation of Joules vs Let Through Voltage here:

http://www.apc.com/us/en/faqs/index?page=content&id=FA158814

Let through Voltage is a better measure of the quality of surge protection quality as Joule ratings can be artificially inflated without giving you any increase in protection. All of our surge products (whether stand alone or in a UPS) meet all industry standards for Surge Protection. The most important thing to remember is that not only can you get surge damage via power lines, but also via data cables. It is important to make sure that all possible points of entry are protected. We offer a variety of dataline surge products as well as power to ensure that you are properly protected.

In the future, if you need a reply quickly you can always contact our support team via phone, email, or chat.

Thanks,

Liam

Liam,

I can't tell by looking at any of the docs for your power strips or you UPSes that have data line coax protection if they will work with a cable modem that is DOCS v3.0..

My ups BE650 I loose 90% of my download speed if I use the data line protection for the coax line.

Please advise.
