Good day! I am just wondering if there are significant difference between this two series of UPS. I understand that newer models do have LCD display. How many battery pack can I install on each UPS? Will they adjust the run-time automatically?

You don't need to adjust the battery pack count manually on the SMX.

Smart UPS X series are the newer ones. They offer additional features like intelligent batteries (that update their runtime and quantity to the UPS automatically), more switchable outlet groups, offer an Emergency Power Off, and a higher power factor.
here is a little summary i found:
• Flexible 2U form factor
• Advanced high frequency design
• Higher power factor
• Added switched receptacle group(s)
• Intelligent battery packs
• Voltage adaptability – 2kVA and up

Do I have to adjust the battery pack number on newer model? Like what I did on my older 1400 UPS?
