SmartUPS RT 6000 XL Temperature Threshold max, high, low, min

Hey,

we just bought a "Smart-UPS RT 6000 XL" and are currently in the process to configure all of the connected machines.

Something I am currently struggling with, is the Point: "Configuration-> Universal i/o ,-> Temperature Threshold"

There I can set the temperature Thresholds: Max/ high/ low/ Minimum/ Hysteresis.

My Problem with that is:

in the PCNS there is only an option for "Temperature Probe 1 out of range"

Which range would that be? I hope it only executes a shutdown if the temperature is higher then the "Max temperature" configured on the UPS, or lower then the "Min Temperature" on the UPS.

Am I right?

I found this thread from 2013:

http://forums.apc.com/spaces/7/ups-management-devices-powerchute-software/forums/general/1651/config...

But there he reports a shutdown already gets triggered by PCNS when the "High temperature" is reached.

Any further info on that?

Regards

Hi Sascha,

You can set Max and Min and yes, whatever happens first would trigger it (and you'd have those enabled for email notifications or alerts in the web UI of the NMC as well).

The ideal environment/ambient temperature for a UPS and the lead acid batteries would be something like 70-80ºF. (Some more general detail is here at the bottom -> http://www.apc.com/support/index?page=content&country=ITB〈=en&locale=en_US&id=FA156516 ) I would hope it doesn't get as hot as 113ºF (45ºC) but like you said, that should be a non issue and wea re only taking a precaution.

I don't really know what customers typically set to be completely honest but your thought process seems straight on based on a normal environment where a UPS is installed. I think we have some defaults in there too?

Hi,

This remains the same as to what Angela reported on the previous forum post. PCNS will react to which ever threshold is met first. An enhancement request has been entered and will be address in a future release of NMC firmware and PCNS.

Okay, so best practice would be to not set the high and low temperature at all, but only set the Max and Min?

I was thinking to also set this max and min temp, so everything would safely shutdown incase our HVAC system breaks and the temperature gets to a critical level.

Any tips on what temperature would be best to set as the max/min temperature when all machines should be shutting down?

I was thinking about 45°C, since that is the temperature where I would guess the machines could get problems with.

Also I thought 45°C would be a good temperature for shutting down everything, because that is a temperature that cannot be reached accidentaly with our HVAC running, since the HVAC should keep the temperature at a maximum of 25°C and even on the hottest day the temperature shouldn't be able to rise above 30°C.

Also Min temperature, I was thinking about 7°C, since that would mean that we either got a breach to the outside world in winter (wall/door/windows/etc) or the HVAC system freaked out and cooled everything down too much.

What do you think about that? What would be best practice?

Regards
