SmartUPS 750 - Normal Internal Temp?

I have used APC products for a while, but have never had occasion to worry much about temperature, living in Michigan. I am using a SmartUPS 750 in a new project in Sub-saharan Africa and I am learning there are a lot of thing I didn't have to worry about with equipment in the States that I need to worry about here!

The internal temp being reported by the UPS here is between 43-44C (109-111F) under its normal 50% load. I'm a little worried that this might be running hot as it has a faint electrical smell. I don't hear any fans, so I'm not sure if a small unit like this even has one. I have looked all over to find the design specs for the unit, but everywhere I can find only lists the environment temp (0-40C, which I am right around most of the time - Africa is hot after all). I can't find any APC documentation that says what the internal temp should be sitting at.

So, what experience do you guys have with UPS internal temps? When do I need to start being worried? Certainly that 40C number can't be the max internal temp - or it would be unable to run in Africa even if it didn't generate any heat of its own, since the ambient is higher than that a lot of the time! Do they really expect this to be run inside a freezer?? 🙂 I have a good 1000VA racked supply coming at the end of the year that I'm sure has fans, so at that point I expect the problem to be solved, but until then do I need to rig up a way to cool this one?

The UPS under my desk is running at 107 right now for the internal temp. That's comletely normal, but you should always have a relatively cool ambient temperature and adequate room for airflow around the UPS.

On larger SmartUPS unit the fans aren't activated until the unit reaches an internal temperature of 140 degrees. So your unit sitting at that temperature is within acceptable parameters.

Hi,

I have a SmartUPS-3000XL I noticed the internal temperature is running at 29.2 celsius which is fine.

My question is whether the UPS will automatically switch off above a certain temperature without the need for the separate external environment sensor?

The reason I ask it that it is in a rack in quite a small room and in the event of a mains power failure I do not have 100% confidence that the Air Con will always come back on when the power is reinstated.
