SmartUPS 1400 console

Hi, I inherited a bunch (about 10) SmartUPS 1400 (2u rackmount) machines. Batteries were all recently swapped out, so the units should be good for a while. However, other than the lights on the front, I have little information about managing them. Each has a console port, but obviously I need to order a cable for this to work as a rs-232 cable is not correct (don't ask).

Does my PC and/or Mac need to be running special management software in order to connect (via the special cable which I need to order but haven't figured out the part number to yet) to each one of these and see whatever it is I can see on the console port? if so, what's the name of the package and does it come in both PC/Mac versions or just PC. Are there any options for adding network management to these units? I doubt it as I haven't really noticed any place where you might add a card. Otherwise, is it possible to connect these ports into a terminal server or the like?

What about any automatic notifications when the power goes out - via (I presume) the same serial port - any options for that? Comments or pointers to part numbers for software/cables are appreciated.

Hello,

The serial cable that comes with our Smart-UPS line is a proprietary smart signalling cable. Part number 940-0024. You can find that cable and some other interface cables through the following link:

http://www.apc.com/products/family/index.cfm?id=59

Thanks.

We have a SMU1400NET but do not have the communication cable that goes from the UPS to the computer. We had a network consultant tell us it is just a standard serial cable. But when he plugged it in, it shut down the UPS system. He believes that may be an indicator that the electronics in the UPS may be going out. However, in looking at this post, it appears that it is not a standard serial cable. Can you tell me which is correct and what cable I need to get?

I presume that means a regular serial cable will not work. Is that correct?

That is correct. Only the 940-0024 Smart Signaling Serial Cable will work.
