Hi,
I'm trying to figure out what to do next, we did a recent battery change the 2017 11/23th and it all looked fine. Then after a first Self-test it started to have a LED Blink for issues. The logs show a critical warning:
Discharged Battery
What would be the next step to check or to change so to resolve the issue?
I noticed the very low runtime remaining and also that the batteries are fully 100% charged.
UPS
Firmware Revision: | 5.1 (ID5) |
Manufacture Date: | 05/05/2013 |
No external Batteries! Only Internal batteries.
The Event Log
11/23/2017 06:21:47 UPS: A low battery condition no longer exists.
11/23/2017 06:21:47 UPS: The battery power is too low to support the load; if power fails, the UPS will be shut down immediately.
11/23/2017 06:21:46 UPS: passed via internal operation a self-test.
11/23/2017 06:21:39 UPS: A discharged battery condition no longer exists.
11/23/2017 06:21:39 UPS: The battery power is too low to continue to support the load; the UPS will shut down if input power does not return to normal soon.
11/23/2017 06:21:38 UPS: Started a self-test.

My apologies Poul, I did miss that.
In addition to what Mark said, if these are recent APC batteries and runtime calibration doesn't increase the estimated runtime, I would call APC to get it sorted out.
If runtime calibration won't complete because the UPS thinks the batteries are bad, you can unplug the UPS to force it to run as long as it can. Make sure you have no critical loads on the UPS and that you have at least 30% load so that runtime parameters can be estimated.

Hi Poul,
If your batteries are as old as the UPS (4 years), they may be due for replacement. Typical lifespan for lead acid batteries is 3-5 years. As batteries age, their capacity decreases so 100% charged is less and less charge. And the less charge the battery holds, the less runtime they provide.
During the battery self-test, the UPS updated its runtime estimate based on the observed condition of the battery.
"Discharged Battery" warns you when the estimated runtime drops below the "low battery duration" which is generally the amount of time needed to safely shut down attached loads.

Hi voidstar,
Thanks for your reply. If you noticed in my post I was trying to clearly point out that this issue persist with freshly new changed batteries. Thus my perplextion. If you have any other advice please assist.

Did you run the battery calibration routine? If you use more than 30% of the rated load and take the batteries to alarm state by disconnecting the mains, they will usually recalibrate fine - without having to totally discharge them as the "calibration" test does, (which is damaging to some extent). I'd try that first and record how long it takes to actually discharge - and compare to the technical charts of "run times". If the run time is actually very short you might have new battery issues!
