Smart UPS RM 3000VA - Not shutting down

Hi,

We are currently fitting a few new RM 3000 UPS' with NIC's, we can get the servers to shut down perfectly well but when it comes to powering them back up it is just not happenning.

At the moment I am just trialling with one server and one UPS to try and get the shutdown / startup correct.

I have tried a number of different things but it is not working, here is an overview of my UPS settings:

Config / Shutdown

Start of Shutdown
Low Battery Duration: 5 minutes
Shutdown Delay: 90 seconds
Maximum Required Delay: 2 minutes
Basic Signaling Shutdown: Enable

Duration of Shutdown
Sleep Time: 0.0 hours [0 to 359.9]

End of Shutdown
Minimum Battery Capacity: 30 %
Return Delay: 00 seconds


PowerChute® Shutdown Parameters

Maximum Required Delay: 5 minutes
On-Battery Shutdown Behavior: Restart when power is restored


Powerchute Client Shutdown Parameters

Events: Runtime Exceeded >

Yes, I want to shut down the system. Shutdown the system only when the event lasts this long (seconds): Enabled

Turn off the UPS after the shutdown finishes (Not applicable to Parallel Silcon UPS and Smart-UPS VT): Enabled



As I said the server shuts down fine, but the UPS itself never seems to shut down, therefore never drops the power to the server completely so the server is unable to power back on using it's AC Restore After Power Loss, which is set to Power On.

I know the AC restore setting works on this server as if I physically pull the power from the server then plug it back in the server powers up straight away.

What I want is to keep the current timing for shutdown of the servers, get the UPS to shut down it's output power until external power is restored and the battery is charged to 30%, then restore output power which then kicks the server back to life.

Can someone point me in the right direction please, I really need to get this sorted.

Hi,

So far to test I have killed the power to the UPS and allowed the battery to run down to the shutdown threshold for the server, the server powers off successfully but the UPS seems to stay active rather than going to sleep and because it doesn't seem to enter sleep mode the server doesn't power back on.

If the server has the power physically pulled from it then put back in the server powers up again so I know the settings for AC Power Loss are correct on the server.

I thought the following setting should have been providing the behaviour I am looking for but it is enabled / ticked and still no joy:

Turn off the UPS after the shutdown finishes (Not applicable to Parallel Silcon UPS and Smart-UPS VT): Enabled

Any thoughts?

Right, everything with your servers are fine, it's just a matter of getting the UPS to turn off when you want it to. How long did you wait after the servers turned off before giving up on the UPS? According to your settings, it looks like it'll wait at least 5m before shutting itself off. Maybe give it a few more minutes and see what it does?

Based on the maximum required delay. That's the maximum amount of time the UPS needs to wait for your servers to shutdown, and it's generally the same value for what you put in the low battery duration field. It doesn't know when all of your servers are finished shutting down, so it will wait this amount of time AFTER a graceful shutdown has been initiated, then power off.

What's the firmware on the NMC (Administration > General > About > application/aos versions) and PCNS version?

Now that I look back at your first post... You actually have 2 maximum required delay values listed: one says 2m and one says 5m. Though like I said before, it's supposed to be the same value as the low battery duration, which you listed as 5m... Which one's the right one? I would assume 5m is correct. Maybe screenshots would help?

I actually waited a while, not sure how long exactly. Will be doing another test this morning so will give it as long as possible.

Why do you say the ups will wait 5 mins to turn off?

I would like it to turn off as soon as the server is shutdown, reguardless of if the power comes back on during the shutdown, or if the battery is still charged, otherwise the servers wont come back up after a breif power outage. I don't want to have to wait for the batteries to hit 0% charge for it to shutdown as that may not happen.
