Smart UPS AVR Trim and Boost Calibration

Hello,

I need to know the steps to configure my APC Smart UPS 1500 correctly via serial cable. The repair guy corrected battery problem of low backup and said that Trim is not a problem, however, since he left I am noticing the UPS AVR trim continuously even when the line voltage is near perfect i.e. 230 VAC. The UPS transfers to battery power when the line voltage is around 235 VAC.

I am not sure if this is a real problem or not but I am very sure that this is not normal.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello Bill,

I did the Braindead procedure. The UPS wasn't starting up, so i had to cold start it. Next, I logged in via serial and checked the model, nothing was different. Had to increase UpperLineVoltage to 114 and it switched to utility power, however, the trim is still present.

I called the local support. Let's see how they respond.

Thank you for your valuable time and support.

kind regards,

Hi Obaid,

Do you have the model number for your ups. It should be on a white sticker on the back. This will allow me to better assist you.

Hi,

If you install PowerChute Business Edition Agent or APCUPSD and connect to the UPS using the serial cable you can adjust the transfer points. You can also adjust the transfer point using a terminal program and using information found in the UPS-Link you can adjust the transfer point. Information on UPS-Link protocol can be found in Kbase FA276164

Hello Bill,

Thank you for the detailed information. It is helpful.

The model detected during the installation of Powerchute Business Edition Agent is: "Smart-UPS ???2 RM XL ??"
Do you think there is a problem with this model number number?

Adding more info: The UPS is connected to 230 VAC, while in APCUPSD it is showing Line Voltage: 120.9 V, HighTrans: 108 V, LowTrans: 92 V, OutPutV: 101 V.

According to my knowledge, RM is shortcode for Rack Mount, which this UPS is not. The voltage info from UPS is also not accurate.

File is Attached for reference.

Please share your opinion and fixes.

Thank you,

Hi,

That is not normal behavior. Was this UPS purchased new or used and from an authorized APC / Schneider Electric partner? If the unit was recently purchase new from a APC / Schneider Electric partner you should contact local APC / Schneider Electric technical support for a replacement. If the unit was purchased used you should contact the sell for a replacement.

I cannot be sure without having the unit but the software indicates the unit has been tampered with.

I purchased it locally almost a year ago and they claim to be authorized resellers / partners.

When they visited recently, UPS was reporting similar "???? ?????????" in name and they fixed it through hyperterminal. They told us that frequent power failures erase or interfere with UPS memory. I do not know if the unit is tampered and the possibility is least because there is no such professional tech hacker in this country.

There must be a solution for such a problem or steps to get original OEM software or firmware.

Awaiting positive response.

Regards,

Hi,

Unfortunately there is no way to upgrade the firmware on a SUA model Smart-UPS. There is a way using hyperterminal to set the name however the UPS is reporting an incorrect serial number and voltages. The serial number is hard coded and the unit is reading the incoming voltage incorrectly. You should try to reset the unit (see Kbase FA156611). If that does not resolve the issue since the unit is only a year old it should still under manufacture warranty so you should contact local support for assistance.

You can find the local support contact information at this link. http://www.apc.com/site/support/index.cfm/contact-information/
