Hi All,
I have a Smart UPS 700 connected via a Smart Cable (serial) to a Vista workstation which is running Powerchute BE 9. All is good.
I would like to change the connection to a network connection. I understand that APC sell a Management Card that fits into the UPS.
I am very impressed with Powerchute BE 9. I am only using the Agent. Would I lose any functionality using a Management Card, would I need different software and/or would I need to install the Powerchute BE 9 Server?
Please could you tell me which card I should buy and how do I stand re. APC software?..
Thanks as always,
Jon

hi, you can use either AP9630, AP9631, or AP9618 -> http://www.apc.com/products/family/index.cfm?id=98
The NMC has a lot more capability than the PCBE 9. I suggest going to http://testdrive.apc.com where you can log in to a live card and investigate the interface for yourself. For graceful shutdown, an NMC utilizes [Powerchute Network Shutdown (free)|http://www.apc.com/products/family/index.cfm?id=127] to gracefully shutdown the attached computers/servers over the network, rather than a serial or USB cable.
these white papers may explain how things work:

hope that helps!

Hi,
Thank you for your comprehensive reply which has set me straight once again.
I rather suspect I now have all the information I shall be needing, and may not be back to this forum for quite some time.
I am very impressed by the wealth of knowledge and friendly support provided by this forum.
I would never hesitate to buy another APC UPS and shall recommend APC at every opportunity.
Kindest regards,
Jon
