Smart UPS 3000 fault

Hi,

I have been asked by a client to look into an apparent issue they have with a Smart UPS3000. Unfortunately I'm no expert with these things.

The issue is that their UPS kicked in and seems to have run until flat although they do not believe there was a supply outage.

When they tried to re-start the UPS it kept tripping out until they disconnected the server. Now with everything re-connected, it appears to be working fine.

The only other information I currently have is that the UPS may be running of a UPS'd supply (their rack is in someone else's Comms room).

I would be grateful if someone could point me in the right direction as it doesn't sound right that you have to disconnect everything to re-start a UPS (or is it).

Many Thank in anticipation

Adrian

For line interactive Smart UPS, no, cause it cannot sync properly. This would not be supported - is this what that UPS is being fed? If anything with the widest threshold settings for input, the UPS will probably constantly switch back and forth to and from battery.

You're right in that you normally don't need to remove the load to restart the UPS.  The fact that the battery was flat and unable to support any load may have been the reason the UPS wouldn't restart.

In any event, those who are smarter than me should be able to set you on the right path.

Hi Adrian,

Yes, I agree with BlueSky but it is really tough to give you any idea without more information or having you near the UPS to look at it. You'd also want to find out if they have a UPS Network Management Card accessory installed in the UPS or PowerChute Business Edition software running. Both of these could provide helpful log information to assist in a diagnosis. Beyond that, it could be many things or it could've just been an outage in the form of electrical noise or something else non obvious. Perhaps a breaker also tripped on the UPS. Very hard to say without knowing more or visually verifying any observations...

BlueSky/Angela,

Many thanks for your comments, they have given me a good starting point. I realise that I gave you very little information but it was the best I had. I will update this post further as & when I find out any more information.

As a thought though (having spent sometime reading through the various FAQ's & other posts) does a Smart UPS have any issues with a stepped sine wave input?

Regards

Adrian
