Smart-UPS 3000 and multiple servers

I have two Windows 2003 Standard Servers, one Redhat Enterprise Server and a Debian Server and one Smart-UPS 3000 RM DL3 (according to PowerChute 7.0.5).

I have the UPS connected to one of my Windows 2003 Servers via Serial and have installed the PowerChute 7.0.5 Agent/Server/Console on this server.

In the event of a power failure I would like the UPS to signal my connected server which will then signal the other three servers on my network to shut down. From the reading I have done I don't appear to be able to do this using the PowerChute Agents.

Am I correct in saying I either need to get a Share-UPS Devices to share one serial connection with multiple servers and install the PowerChute Agent on each server or I need to get a APC Network Management Card, install it into my Smart-UPS 3000, connect it to the network and then install the 'Network Shutdown' software?

Am I on the right track here?

We are using Debian and Redhat Enterprise 4.

We only have PowerChute Basic Edition. From what I have read the Network solution doesn't require us to purchase any software.

My client has two IBM AS400 9406 model 820 and 810 connected to a single 10KVA APC SMART UPS RT 10000 XL In the event of a power failure I would like the UPS to signal the two AS400s to shut down. Is there a way to do this as I noticed only one serial port at the back of the UPS?

you'd have to look into getting an [AP9607 interface expander|http://www.apc.com/resource/include/techspec_index.cfm?base_sku=AP9607] to use in the UPS accessory smart slot as well as the correct AS400 signaling cables.

here is some info on the cables:

• 940-0006 – AS/400 - There are two cables in this box. One cable has a DB15 for attaching to very old (and much larger) AS/400 servers. The other cable (the only one we ever use) has a DB9 for attaching the AS/400. Both obviously have a DB9 on the other end that attaches to the UPS.
• AP98274 – i5, Power 5/6/7 - This is for these servers going back only about 5 years, starting with the i5 Model 520. Since then there has been Power 6 and just this summer Power 7 lines of servers. They all use this newer cable.
