Smart UPS 1400XL - Any way to restore after control-y command

This was originally posted on APC forums on 5/5/2015

Is there any way to restore after I accidently hit control-y while in the console.  It appears that this command has pretty much wiped all information from the prom. Even checking the model now responds back with the model being a 450.

Thanks for any bright ideas.

Thank you for the link. It appears that the first one did the trick. I was able to reset the firmware to the correct version and also had to set the line voltage an load. So far it looks like everything is up and running again, but I'll do a little testing to make sure everything is working.

Hi Brian,

This is not field recoverable unfortunately..Ctrl + y does wipe the EEPROM when you're in programming mode. Programming mode was only originally intended for APC use and requires a special timing sequence to gain access to in an effort to prevent a user or program from accidently doing these types of commands when trying to read status information from the UPS.

Brian, Im pretty sure many if not all of the Smart UPS's have their eeprom chip in a socket on the mainboard / "brainboard" rather than being soldered in, i know my 3000XL Modular does, and im also sure my 2200XL Rack mount does as well, quite possibly you could try to get a dead or functioning unit of the same make thats cheap and just swap the eeproms, or if you have access to an eeprom reader / programmer you could dump the good eeprom to file, verify it atleast twice against the eeprom, then program the "wiped" eeprom.

Are you able to change anything in the eeprom over serial still in programming mode? - Alex.

- Alex.

I do have a second UPS of the same model.  I did open the case and found the chip in socket, so it sounds like I might have a chance. As far a the reader/programmer, I do not have access to one (also checked a few local computer shops to no avail). I have not tried to change anything in the eeprom after the mistake, but I was able to still issue commands and received responses to it.  If you have any suggestions/recomendations about a cheap programmer I'm all ears. I know at this point I would like to try to salvage it, but I do not want to risk swapping the eeproms from one to the other to test it out in fear of loosing the second ups.

You might be able to copy values from the good unit's EEPROM using the command interface. See:
