Smart-UPS 1400 serial connection kills power to UPS

This was originally posted on APC forums on 2/17/2008

I just purchased two used Smart-UPS 1400s, which utilize a serial connection. When I connect the serial cable to my server, then plug it into the UPS, it immediately kills the power to the UPS and thus, my server.

I assumed they use a standard db9 RS232 connection. Is that not right?

I tried this with and without having PowerChute installed. It made no difference.

When the serial cable was attached at both ends, I could not even turn the UPS on. I had to disconnect the cable from the UPS in order to power everything back up.

Any advice and insight would be much appreciated.

tia.

Thanks for the reply.

As I purchased them used, they didn't come with cables. I'll see if I can find some.

Todd.
You can get a 940-0024C or it's generic equivalent. It's not that difficult to make one out of a regular serial cable either if you want.

Hey,
You need to use the cable shipped with the UPS. Its part number should be 940-0024C or 940-0024D, or 940-1524C or 940-1524D , this depends on what specific UPS model you are using.
