Smart UPS 1400 Fan Constantly On

I have Smart UPS 1400 that is probably close to 10 years old (yeah - I should replace the batteries). But this week something weird started to happen. The fan now runs constantly. I have completely shutdown the unit and performed the self test. But the fan keep running nonstop? Does anyone know a way to fix this problem?

Many thanks,
Alex

The SU1400NET turns on the fan when power going to the battery exceeds a certain threshold, which I've yet to measure. Parasitic charging current increases with battery age. Perhaps your battery pack have deteriorated to this point?

Power up completely and disconnect the battery while power is on. This should kill the fan within a few seconds if there is no internal problem. If it doesn't, there's an internal fault.

Have you performed a load test? The unit should run at least a few minutes with 500W load. (new battery gives 20+ min).

Hello,

Here are our Fan Operation Parameters for SmartUPS:

http://nam-en.apc.com/cgi-bin/nam_en.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=6672

If the fan is still spinning beyond these parameters, more than likely there is a fan control sensory fault in the UPS. A constant fan is not something to be overly concerned with in actual UPS production. As long as the UPS is still providing proper power whether online or on battery, having your fan spin constantly shouldn't be a great concern.

Thanks.

A constant fan is not something to be overly concerned with in actual UPS production. As long as the UPS is still
providing proper power whether online or on battery, having your fan spin constantly shouldn't be a great concern.
My SU1400NET has an always-on fan also, even when no equipment is connected to it (i.e. no load) and the battery charge indicator LEDs show full charge so I assume that charging is minimal.

I am using this unit in a home office and while it appears to be working fine other than the fan spinning constantly, the noise of the fan is the loudest thing in the office. Is repairing a "fan control sensory fault" a component-level repair or will an entire board need to be replaced?

Or, I suppose more accurately, is this an easy fix (i.e. inexpensive) or a one that is not?

Is there an authorized service center in central Maryland (21755) or do I need to ship the unit directly to APCC?

APC does not repair these units in house. I am not sure what type of repair would be in order for that. APC's authorized repair center is Coastal Business Machines. Their website is www.cbmi.com

and just to note, on our newer units, such as the SUA1500 which is the replacement for the SU1400, the fans now are designed to run all the time but they have two speeds. a low speed that the UPS runs at majority of the time and then a higher speed when the battery is charging, the load is above 75%, the internal temp goes above 104º or if the UPS is running on battery.
