I'm trying to install PowerChute Basic Edition on a server. The UPS has a Network Management Card but when installing the software it looks for a com/usb port. How can i make it use the network card?
Thanks

hi again,
Powerchute business edition and the network management card aren't meant to be used together. they are two different solutions to essentially achieve graceful shutdown two different ways - via serial/usb cable or via the network (which is what you are doing).
a network management card is to be used with APC's powerchute network shutdown software.
[you can find it here|http://www.apcc.com/tools/download/software_comp.cfm?sw_sku=SFPCNS223&id=127&family=&part_num=&swfam...].

Hey again...yeah I'm back...
But don't you use Powerchute business edition to montior the UPS?

yes, only if you dont have a management card.
a management card monitors the UPS and achieves the same thing (even has a couple extra features) versus the powerchute business edition which only works with the serial or USB cables. they both give UPS status, voltages, etc
a network management card is easier with the fact that you can monitor it directly over the network and shutdown servers over the network. with business edition, if you have 4 servers, you'd have to hook them up serially to the UPS with 4 separate cables, which i wont get into how thats done.
besides, the fact that you have an SURT*D* unit, which we discussed a while back, that does not work with powerchute business edition, only powerchute server software (which is totally different), but again, since you have a network management card, you dont need to worry about that. 🙂

Oh ok...Thanks for that. I'll configure & install APC's powerchute network shutdown software (I install this on all servers connected to the UPS?).
What about central montior of UPS? I've seen the demo on the APC website using the APC PowerChute business Edtion Deluxe which looks good. We're got over 80 different sites and most have 2200 UPS while the bigger sites have the 3000/5000 UPS.
Sorry for being a pain!

you aren't a pain 😉
yes, powerchute network shutdown should be installed on each computer that is attached to the UPS for power that you want to gracefully shutdown.
yes, powerchute business edition deluxe allows you to monitor up to 25 agents per PCBE Deluxe server installation.
first i'd see how many have the network management cards in them. we had a device called ISX manager that would monitor all of your network cards, much like PCBE monitors all of the agents. that has been discontinued, and its place we have a device called [ISX Central Basic|http://www.apc.com/resource/include/techspec_index.cfm?base_sku=AP9465&tab=models] which has taken its place. it comes with a 25 node license to start. other than that, we wont have any other tools for a little bit to centrally monitor the network management cards..but if they dont have network management cards, you can look into PCBE deluxe if these will be hooked up to computers via serial cable, rather than network management cards.

thanks 🙂
So we have a mixed enviroment where 2/3 of are sites have UPS which are connected via serial/USB cable and 1/3 have network management cards. So there isn't a product to manage all devices???

ISX Mgr is able to monitor Network Management Card as well as PCBE Agent via SNMP. But it is unavailable for PCBE Agent for Solaris/Linux.

I knew ISX Mgr has been discontinued in the near future.
I was able to add PCBE Agent to ISXC 4.x, but that's all. I could not see more UPS readings from ISXC. Not sure about ISXC 5. I might test it out when I have a chance.
