Hello,
We're now working on improving our UPS management and were looking to start using the Network management cards.
I need to get these online as we are going to start utilizing StruxureWare.
As of now I have in use
Symmetra LX w/ AP9619
Smart UPS RT8000 w/ AP9619
Smart UPS RT5000 w/ AP9631.
As of now I have the Symmetra and RT8000 connected to our network via the RJ45 jack.
The RT8000 I can see in our ARP table and found the IP and can confirm browser connection prompts for credentials. I checked online and default should be apc/apc but that is not letting me in.
The Symmetra isnt showing anything in ARP, but the Switch does confirm the MAC that is on the port, so I am assuming this might have been setup with a static IP or a different VLAN.
I haven't tried the RT5000 yet.
What options to I have to reset the user/pass and Network connections?
I seem to have read a mix of holding the reset button down 15 seconds to reset the user/pass but some seem to indicate the network settings stay, some default. If so is the default DHCP?
I did learn the lesson a few months ago to not use a regular console cable, so I dug around and found a 940-1524D.

Yes, for the NMC1's (ex. AP9619), the reset button can either reset the admin username/password (by following the procedure Angela posted) or reboot the NMC. There is no way to format the card or wipe any other settings using the reset button on this model.
NMC2's (ex. AP9630/AP9631) can be formatted using the reset button.

I thought it was 20-30 seconds, the management card network lights change when it resets. go for 30 seconds and you should be ok. network settings will not stay.

For the AP9631, you'll need a 940-0299 cable which ships with the NMC, but you can also find the pinout online.

I went digging around in the rooms and found the APC packet w/ a 940-1525a rj45-db9 so I think I'm good, even though that cable part # isnt specifically mentioned on that faq.
I'll schedule some time after hours time and go to each unit and do a pass reset and then configure the network portions.
I was hoping the settings were stored on the card itself so I could just configure them all in one location and slide them into the units but it seems that isnt possible.

Hi Will,
Yes, the network settings like IP, PowerChute and Notifications are on the card itself. Once it's installed, you can configure UPS settings via the network. You have a lot of options there including configuring via the web interface or FTPing in a config.ini file.
I don't think the 940-1525a cable will do what you want. It connects the UPS to a PC for configuration and shutdown. The AP9631 has a small 2.5MM stereo mini jack labeled "Console" for configuring it serially. The 940-0299 cable has a DB9 connector on one end and stereo mini plug on the other.

Hello Will,
In order to reset the passwords on the NMC, you will need the serial cables for the each of the card generations. First, you will need the 940-0024 (serial to serial) for the AP9617/8/9, which plugs into the UPS and your computer, and you will need the 940-0299 (serial to 2.5mm TRS) for the AP9630/1, which plugs into your computer and then directly into the NMC.
FA156075 describes the procedure for resetting the password for both generations. The procedure is a little different for each.
In terms of setting up the NMC, and configuring it, you can serial in, with the above cables, and change the network settings. Again the procedure is slightly different for each, but there are various methods described in FA156064. You can do all this without interruption to production, so it can be done during normal business hours.
You can also do all the configuration at one site, and then move the cards, as they do not lose settings when removed from power.

I'm a little uncertain now. The UPS is a SURTD5000 and it still had the documentation package. The Installation and operation manual on Page 5 shows the RJ45 for serial, http://www.apcmedia.com/salestools/ASTE-6Z8LUC/ASTE-6Z8LUC_R11_EN.pdf?sdirect=true
As it also came with the 940-1525A. I see from a screenshot I have of the cart it has 3 RJ45s in total, 2 marked I/O. I wouldnt be able to use those?
I will need to double check but I think the UPS itself has an Rj45, would that be the port I could use?
The SURT8000XLT has the AP9619 which has no port designated Serial but the UPS unit itself has a serial port which I believe is what I need to interface with.

To add, if you want to wipe all of the configuration quickly and can afford to lose it all, including any preset TCP/IP settings, then you can press and hold down the reset button you see on the AP9631. You can get a paper clip or similar and stick it and hold it towards the top of the little hole to get the best alignment. When you do this, that status LED with the checkmark and X next to it will pulse green and then orange when you need to let go. You need to do it like 15-20+ seconds. This process resets all configuration completely (but doesn't modify firmware versions).
Maybe it is an option for you, especially if you don't have the cable I mentioned.

I wasn't sure if the reset did just network settings, just the admin credentials or both.
We are looking to start fresh so resetting it is a valid option.
So I wouldnt be able to use the Rj45 in the SURTD in this instance?

Hi Will - as far as I know, no, because this UPS is SURTD vs. SURT so the serial communications is different and doesn't work like the other UPS. You can certainly try but I am pretty sure it won't work. If you try, connect @ 9600 baud rate, 8, N, 1, None for the rest of the settings. Make sure Scroll Lock isn't on on the keyboard. And press enter a few times after the connection is made to see if you get a User Name prompt. If you get an "RT Control Menu" instead, it means it is not working. Or you may get nothing. I haven't tried in a while, especially with both SURTD and the newer AP9631.

Just to confirm, holding the reset button will clear the credentials and network settings for both the AP9619 and AP9631?
We wanted to start fresh so have no need to worry about preserving any current settings.

Hi Will - only on AP9631 will holding the reset button clear everything including TCP/IP and credentials.
On AP9619, you'll need to use the password reset procedure (refer to NMC1 procedure for AP9619 explained here ->http://www.apc.com/us/en/faqs/FA156075) to gain access and then once inside the console menu, you can issue a reset to defaults command. The reset button is used during the password reset procedure and you only press and release it in a certain way - no holding. A serial connection is required to do the password reset procedure too along with pressing the reset button in a certain sequence.

That was where I was getting a bit confused as I have a mix of UPS' types and management cards.
We had someone at another side hold the reset button and that reset the network settings so we could get the IP from the dhcp lists. I wasnt sure if it did indeed change the password or it was coincidentally the default.
So on the AP9619 the reset button just temporarily resets the Userp/pass for console? So it does not reset the network settings?
