Is it possible to send a sms with a smart-ups?

I need to make a project for school, and my project is to try send a sms with a smart-ups when he goes on battery.

I do have another question, if i want to send a mail with Powerchute business (when power fail) do i need a Network Management Card?  

(sorry i am kinda beginner with UPS things.)

Hello Pietrick

1) To answer your first question, "sms with a smart-ups".

Unfortunately, there is no way to send an SMS for UPS based events, regardless of what Network Management Card you have or UPS for that matter.  However, an alternative method for utilizing SMS notification, is to purchase Schneider Electric remote monitoring service (RMS).  In using this service, the UPS Network Management Card 1 uses emails to send to our RMS team who then can alert customer (via email or SMS).  The UPS Network Management Card 2 sends the information out via HTTP.  The RMS team can view the UPS information on their web portal and alert customer (via email or SMS).  However I doubt that you would be interested in the RMS service, especially since you only have a school project.  An alternative solution would be to use the following smart slot card that you can purchase for your UPS (if it does not already have one).

With this card, you configure the UPS events (such as on battery) to trigger an output relay on the smart card.  Once you get the relay triggered, you can then use that as a signal to drive an external GSM Modem (third party device).  From this point on, the GSM modem will take care of sending out the SMS.  You can find many school based projects for designing embedded GSM modem based control applications (Google is your friend).

2) To answer your second question regarding Powerchute business.

The POWERCHUTE PERSONAL EDITION (requires USB connection only) and the POWERCHUTE BUSINESS EDITION requires either a USB or serial cable connection.  Both editions do 'not' require an NMC.  POWERCHUTE BUSINESS EDITION will send out emails over the LAN from the computer on which it is installed.

Thanks allot for your help, now i got allot more options/way's to go. I am not sure which option i should do. Ill search today for the best one. After my school project they keep running the system(if i finished  it).

I searched for that, the problem is in the Netherlands most of providers do not support it. And the provider we use doesn't support it as well.

That's too bad! You might have already tried this but one way to find the SMS gateway is to use your phone to send an SMS to your email address. Otherwise, often people use Twilio to send SMSes, however that will require some plumbing work on your end. Perhaps curl or wget to POST to their REST API using PowerChute's command file option.

One thing to be aware of is when power goes out, does your internet work?

Some other options:

1) AP9635 card has a modem and can dial a number when an event occurs. Rather expensive and I don't think there's a lot of support for this because not many people use it.

2) Simple signaling includes an AC Fail signal. Might be a cheaper way of interfacing the UPS with custom GSM hardware suggested by Haseeb. I suspect a GSM module will need less ongoing support from you than an internet service after your project is over.

When i want to use curl i need a linux device  connected to the ups rigth?

I got it. I just configured the mail give smtp acces in sb2011 and then he send a mail.

I needed to send a text so use messagebird to make from a mail a sms.
