I was able to resolve the issue on my own. After powering off the UPS and resetting the NMC2 interface, the NMC web interface presented an option to install firmware in the "About/UPS" pull down that was not available if a valid version of the firmware was already installed on the UPS.
I dodged a bullet this time as in the past I have rendered a UPS an expensive boat anchor by having a firmware update go bad.

When the UPS has no valid firmware, all of the NMC web pages that deal with the UPS, such as the "About/UPS" page you found, provide a link to the firmware update page in "Configure/Firmware Update". Glad it worked out okay.
