I used new unit for a couple of months via USB, until waking one morning to a squealing UPS displaying AVR Relay Weld Fault. Tech Support said a firmware update would solve the problem, but doing so required a serial connection. Who has a serial port anymore?
After purchasing a USB to serial adapter, I attempted to connect using the serial cable provided with the SMX1500RM2U, but was unable to do so. Tech Support wouldn't help debug connecting, but did ship a refurb with updated firmware.
Meanwhile, I installed a serial card in the PC and again tried unsuccessfully to connect.
What happens the next time a firmware update is required? I need to be able to connect serially, but HOW? Do I need to "braindead" the unit like the old SUA series when switching from USB to serial, and if so, how?

Unlike earlier SmartUPS, the SMT and SMX models such as your SMX1500RM2U can speak both USB and serial at the same time. Also unlike earlier SmartUPS, they don't speak UPSLink so if you're trying to poll it serially that way, it's not surprising you get no response. Obviously we hope you never need a firmware update again, but firmware update should be possible either through the serial port or using the network management card.
