SMT2200I - possible to switch off and on completely with external switch?

Hello,

I use the APC SMT2200I in a special enviroment (not for computer/server) of an heating oven for our

house.

The SMT2200I should backup the hardware of the oven to avoid that temperature gets to high and

damage the pipes of the complete heating unit, if the power supply (line) goes down.

It works fine, but the heating isn't used all the time and so it would be great to be able to switch

the USV completely off with an external switch.

And here starts the trouble. I was not successful to switch the USV off, you can do it directly on

the USV lcd panel, but it doesn't switch off completely, fan is still working and it takes about 15-20W

of the line supply.

I can only switch it off if I disconnect the battery pack 😕

Is there any way to upgrade the hardware, that I can switch it completely offline, best would be

with an external swich, so I can control it with the heating control unit?

For any help it would be thankful.

The purpose of an EPO in general is "Emergency Power Off" and not designed as a way to command the UPS off like you would via another method or if you let the UPS turn off due to low battery. So you're right, EPO is designed for a user to trip in an emergency when the UPS needs to be turned off quickly or during an actual emergency.

You could look into dry contact options which is what we generally offer for something like this or your local tech support can explore the option of sending out the serial port pinout to you for this function.

i will have to check into this then. i have not encountered a UPS where the EPO does not braindead the system completely.

Seems like you need the UPS to be braindead versus just turning the output off.

The easiest way to braindead the UPS quickly is to integrate with an Emergency Power Off (EPO) switch. Upon activating the EPO, you can braindead the UPS immediately but then you'd have to worry about turning it back on which you could still do via the front panel.

I tried this, but the USV didn't switch off completely.

Display goes dark, power output was switched off, so far, so good.

But fans are still working and power consumption was about 10-15 Watts.

I would need a REAL off state, with no power drain. Isn't that possible?

Are you saying you tried this with an EPO switch? I know the front panel turning it off will not braindead it but an EPO switch would do this.

Yes, tried it with an EPO switch, it is not very difficult to build a small button to

use it as EPO-Switch.

I hoped that it will completely turn off, but fan still works. To switch the USV back on

you have to use the keys on the front panel.

Can you verify the firmware version on your UPS via the LCD?

Some of this behavior might actually be fixed by upgrading the UPS firmware I am told. If you go to the front panel, go to the About menu and press enter and scroll through for UPS firmware version - something like 01.8 should be the number format.

I'd ultimately want to make sure the UPS is up to date to ensure the behavior works properly as it is designed. If it still does not work like we need it, we may be able to use one of the pins on the RJ-45 serial port to control the UPS in a certain manner to maybe get this to work.

OK - i believe it is up to date. Here is a suggestion I've had:

I think time has come to give up...

I ordered a 10pin RJ-45 cable and made it ready for the remote connection.

And yes, you can switch the UPS on and off without problems, but still it doesn't shut off

completely. Fan is working and it takes about 10 watt AC power. If you switch the AC supply,

it continues working in "vampire mode".

So it is the same as switching it off on the front panel...

Did I something wrong or is it really not possible to switch it COMPLETELY off?

Thinking about inside modification with a power switch for the battery connector... 😕

The UPS will run for 10 minutes until it "braindeads" itself.

I am not sure if you missed the part of my response previously:

I believe the suggestion was to turn it off using the pins on the RJ-50 connection on the UPS and then after 10 minutes with no AC power, it will braindead itself if you remove AC power. So you could externally switch AC power to and from this circuit to make sure the UPS braindeads and you don't see the "vampire power" and then switch it back to the unit when you're ready to turn it back on.

NOW I got it right

And yes, it works fine. Switch off via the Remote Switch I made with the RJ50-Cable,

then wait about 15 Minutes, than shut off AC supply for the USV and after about 5 minutes

the unit goes completely offline

Switch AC back again and use remote ON switch, USV gets back to work. Everything is fine

now. Now only try to make this things automatically ... Thank you.

hm, sounds good, but where could I get the pinout manual for the 10pin RJ-45 connector of the SMT-2200I?

There is no information in the manual and google wasn't successful, too. Or do I need additional hardware?

it's not publicly available. Technical support can provide it normally but let me research and email it over. I don't have it myself.
