SMART UPS 3000 problem

Hello

Here is my problem with UPS. I have model SUA3000RMI2U with batteries replaced in Jun 2014. While trying to run a self-test, it failed:UPS: At least one faulty battery exists.

UPS alarm test is passed

I removed the batteries, checked UPS output voltage (55.08VDC) as well as mechanical connection and all looks fine. And since batteries are relatively new, I am not sure if they are problem or the problem is with the UPS itself. When running self test, the bad battery red LED is ON

I have another model of this UPS and it passes self-test. I have also redundancy switch installed.

What should I do next? Replace batteries again? Please advise.

Slawomir.

Hello
Thanks for the reply. Here is some more information
UPS units were purchased in the US in 2007 or early 2008. Model number is SUA 3000RMI2U, serial JS0713015506
I called APC Japan and they refused to sell me new batteries as UPS with 230 VAC output are not covered by them. So I had to buy batteries from a third party
We have scheduled power S/D once a year for 8 hours. Other than that, no power S/Ds, both scheduled and unscheduled. UPS is stored in MCC room with temp around 25-27 deg C
We kept the original batteries till May 2014 (so they were 6 years old) and then replaced. All tests are run in manual mode so failure was found during manual test.
One question. Assuming I buy fresh set of batteries, can I hot swap them with current unit without powering it down? Or I should switch the UPS off, remove the old ones, install the new ones and power it back on?
Thanks
Slawomir Stys

Hi Slawomir,

Since you have another model of the UPS, I would swap that battery temporarily into this UPS and run a manual self test. This way you tell whether the issue is with the battery or the UPS.

Other thoughts:

- Did you purchase a genuine APC battery or purchase third party ones? If it's a genuine APC battery, there should be a white sticker with a model and serial number on it which will be helpful determining the age of the battery.

- Do you have frequent power outages or an unusual environment (ie. overly hot, etc.)?

- How long did the batteries last before you swapped them in June 2014? (knowing the UPS serial number would be helpful as well)

- Does this failed self test message occur when the UPS runs it automatically or when you run it manually?

Let me know what you find out.

- Tommy
