SC1000 and HP Proliant Server

I wanted to confirm that there may be problems with the SC line of UPSs (specifically the SC1000) and HP Proliant ML350 servers. Can anyone confirm that ?

I can't confirm a known incompatibility, but it's been discussed here before and not unheard of in power conditioning industry that an active PFC power supply can sometimes pick a fight with modified square wave UPSs. The Smart-UPS SC may have the same control and monitoring capabilities as the Smart-UPS, but the battery backup inverter is built on the same modified square-wave design used by the consumer grade Back-UPS

After verifying the UPS is actually adequately sized for the UPS and you still experience strange behavior from the server when you pull the plug to the UPS, then there's a conflict.

In this case, your options, you can find a refurbished SU1000NET or SU1400NET on Google search.
If budget allows, you could get a new SUA1500 or SUA1000
These have a sinewave inverter and provides a clean sinewave output even while on battery.

Thanks for the replies. KVAr - what you said sounds like what I've heard before. However I'm a computer tech not an electrician, so it goes a bit over my head. It appears I should stay away from the SC models. For the record, the problem I would run into is the UPS would report an overload, even though 1000VA seemed to be plenty for a Proliant server.

I really don't know your server. I say get a kill-a-watt power meter online, which is something like $25-30 shipped, then go from there. You can find it easily on Google.

Your SC is rated for 600 Watts / 1000 VA. Check both W & VA. If the two values are pretty darn close to the same, you have active PFC.
Check wattage again and there should be adequate margin between the read value and 600W.

The server shouldn't be pulling much more than 300W. This ensures you have enough power capacity under full load and you don't get too close to the rated maximum, as the runtime drops exponentially as you approach the full rated load on small UPSs.

If you're using a CRT, disable Energy Saver or switch to LCD. If the power is lost while the CRT is in sleep mode and someone wakes it up, the degauss coil that is activated on wake up could cause the UPS to shut off.
