We have a lot of UPSes that have incorrect IP addresses on the mgmt card (because they have been shipped around different sites). Consequently I cannot communicate with them as all our sites have unique vlans. In addition I do not actually know the configured IP addresses of the mgmt cards. The methods I have tried to configure the mgmt cards are:
1. Device IP wizard. Does not work because different vlan.
2. Arp method. Does not work. I cannot get this method to work at all.
3. Laptop with crossover cable. Does not work because I don't know the vlan to set the laptop IP to.
Is there a way to reset the card so that the Device Wizard can detect it? The reset button only resets the username AFAIK, not the IP.
Short of purchasing new cards is there any way around this?

Thanks, some models are AP9630, some are earlier. I don't know which without doing an inspection.
Can you explain the "format" method?
Looks like the serial method may be the way to go.
As an aside, can you "hotplug" install a new mgmt card without turning off the UPS? I don't want any downtime.

i picKed a winna, I have a NMC2 and I did the reset button. Can I use, after this, the APC Device IP Configuration Wizard to configure the card with the same IP I had before? Without Serial Communication?

you can change network settings by hyper terminal with the plug cable if you know your user and pass of the AP9619

can you let me know what model cards these are? if you can physically get to the card, it should have a model on the faceplate of the card.
you should not have to buy new cards. depending on the model of the card, you might be able to "format" the cards which i can explain.
at a minimum, you should be at least able to reset the password, [using these instructions|http://nam-en.apc.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/7879], and then gain serial access to the network management card to reassign network settings, which is outlined in [these instructions|http://nam-en.apc.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/3061].
also, the current device IP wizard only works for unconfigured cards, nevermind the VLAN issue. ARP will most likely give you an issue as well when the card is already configured.
hope that helps.

ok, format is available on AP9630 and AP9631 only. if you hold down the little pinhole reset button for 20+ seconds, the status LED should start flashing amber I think. this will wipe ALL settings off the NMC and even clear the event and data logs. format is also a command available in the command line interface on the later firmwares if you gain serial access. the pinhole reset button format may be easiest. you just need patience on hitting the reset button through the pinhole and holding it 🙂 . NMC2 will reset to a default boot mode of DHCP/BootP or DHCP only depending on the firmware version installed. if you use DHCP, and need to reference your DHCP server for MAC addresses, APC devices begin with 00:C0:B7.
serial is the best option if you are able to fully reconfigure the card but regardless, you need to be local to the card to do it. this is not available on AP9617/18/19.
here is some documentation on the correct procedure for installing/uninstalling cards:
http://nam-en.apc.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/10865
http://nam-en.apc.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/9322/
Unofficially, i do this all day long without using the procedures above to avoid downtime. while it is the unofficial method, i would still recommend doing the procedures above but if you cannot or don't want to, i think it will be just fine. i just want to put that disclaimer up.
hope that helps.

when you say you 'did the reset button' did you do the format procedure or something else? the newer device IP wizard v5.0.1 that we have for download can search for configured cards if you input an IP range to search and query or it can search for cards doing a DHCP request on the network as well. it does not support any serial communication itself so you if you can use one of the two options i mentioned, you'd be in good shape.
