Requirement to shutdown ESX and VM

Hi,

What's the minimum configuration to shutdown Esxi and VM when UPS running on low battery??

I've one physical server with ESXi and install with one VM ( Red Had Linux 6 (64 bit)). I've already install vMA and PCNS on Esxi host.

But, I haven't set any configuration on PCNS Client and NMC on UPS.

What's configuration need to do on PCNS and NMC???

Please advise me. Thank You.

UPS Model: SURTD3000RMXLI with SURT192RMXLBP

NMC Model: AP9630

NMC aos and sumx version: V5.1.7 and V5.1.7

PCNS version: PNCS 3.0.1 Build 2650

ESXI version: 5.1.0

Hi,

Does PCNS record the low battery event in the event log? Also, what version of VMware vMA is PCNS running on?

If PCNS is recording the event and the host is not shutting down then the issue could be licensing (see KBase FA159705 ) or the issue can be caused by the DNS server being off line (see KBase FA166844 ).

You can test communication between PCNS and the host by running this command (Note: if the command runs properly the host will be powered down so only run this test when it is safe to power down the host).

1. CD to /opt/APC/PowerChute/group1 folder
2. Run sudo bin/shutdown

This is the output you should see if the PCNS can connect to the host.

Yes,The PCNS record the low battery event in the event log.

The vMA version is vMA 5.0 and ESXi Server is license version.

Hi Ye Lin,

Where you able to run the command to shut the host down and if so what output was returned? If it failed and the ESXi is licensed then the issue could be due to the libraries. KBase FA159783 discusses this issue and provides solutions.

Hi Bill,

I able to run the command to shutdown the host(Esxi) from vMA. I'm still requesting customer for server down time.

For KBase FA159783, I was check the shutdown script by using solution 2 and the add in text ( export PERL_LWP_SSL_VERIFY_HOSTNAME=0 ) is already there by default.

Hi,

The NMC comes per-configured to trigger low battery shutdown when the UPS has 2 minutes of battery life left. When PCNS receives the low battery signal from the NMC it will command the ESXi host down. The ESXi host will then command the Redhat VM down if you have installed VMware tools on the VM and configured the host properly. (See kbase FA159688)

As for minimum configuration, you need to determine how much time is needed to power down the VM and the host. If the host needs 3 minutes to power down gracefully and the VM needs 2 minutes I suggest changing the NMC low battery setting to 10 minutes. This give the system the needed time and a extra 5 minutes for safety.

Thank You for your reply and suggestion.

Please see the picture below which is current config on NMC. Is it correct if i want to shutdown when the UPS has 20 minutes of battery life left?? Then, I will enable the " Basic Signaling Shutdown ". Do i need to change " Basic Low Battery Duration " to 1200 seconds?

BTW, I understand that PCNS also to trigger shutdown if some events occurs such as low battery, overload etc.

So, Is any events need to enable on PCNS?

Ye Lin,

You do not need to enable any events in PowerChute unless you want the OS shutdown due to these events. PowerChute will automatically react to the NMCs low battery signal and start the OS shutdown.

As for Basic Signaling Shutdown, you do not need to enable this. Enable basic-signaling shutdown only if your computer is connected to the UPS with a basic-signaling serial cable, and the type of UPS either does not support advanced signaling or is configured to communicate in basic signaling.
