Insects can and do cause electrical shorts, but usually there would probably be some "remains" present (as well as other evidence of contamination such as droppings/debris/web/etc) if one large enough to cause a short across that diode got in the UPS. Reading online there are good stories about cockroaches inside coffee machines ! More likely scenario however is the diode just failed...in which case there could be more component damage than just the diode.
