Powerchute on Windows and Solaris???

Hello all,

I have been fooling around with Powerchute and I am confused. I use a symmetra LX 16000 RM and it have Powerchute integrated in the APC Network management card. However, what I want is to shutdown my WINDOWS and SOLARIS servers.... not the UPS itself.

Is the shutdown option in the APC Network Management Card for the UPS itself or for client servers (WIndows, Linux, Solaris ect?). Are the clients listed UPS or servers.....????

Also, in the documentation, it says that the Powerchute must be installed on my servers......so I don't know which Powerchute does what....can anyone help me clear this mess up? 😞

***EDIT:*** Also, if it's true I must install Powerchute on my Windows and solaris servers...I must install it on all of them??? O.o that's a lot if that's the case.

Hi,

The Powerchute section in the Network Management Card works in conjunction with Powerchute, meaning if an IP address is listed in this section, then thats a server that is listening for Powerchute signals.

ie. 192.168.1.1 - MS Exchange Server. If 192.168.1.1 is listed in the Powerchute list, then this means that Powerchute is installed on the server and is listening for information from the Network Card. If the Symmetra goes on battery, then the Network Card sends an on battery message to the server, Powerchute receives the message, and begins the shutdown sequence based on the settings you have set.

The shutdown options are tied into the Powerchute settings. For example, the Low battery alarm, found under Shutdown, is the setting that the Network Card will start sending a low battery signal. If Powerchute is running on your server, and you left the server set for default shutdown, then when the Symmetra hits a low battery signal, the Network Card sends out the low battery message, Powerchute receives low battery, and begins the shutdown sequence.

The shutdown option is how long, after Powerchute has shutdown a server, that the UPS will wait before turning itself off. So, when the last Powerchute client in the Powerchute list has shutdown, the Symmetra will wait x amount of time before turning off.

All servers that you want to have shutdown based on the Symmetra being on batterym must have Powerchute installed. So, if you have 10 servers running off of the Symmetra and all 10 need to be gracefully shutdown, in the event of a power failure, then you must install Powerchute on all 10 servers.

Now I am wondering, althought I doubt it, is there anyway to power up my server if let's say the UPS switch from battery mode to input mode?

Also, if that's possible is there a way I can power up my servers in a certain order? (DC first, member server next etc)

Hello,

Once all servers running Powerchute shut down, the UPS will receive confirmation and will go into sleep mode. Once power returns, the UPS, by default, will come out of sleep mode and will begin to power the equipment again. Whether the actual equipment reboots and powers on depends on the equipment itself. Some servers will stay turned off, some will come back on. It all depends on the servers power settings.

In regards to powering equipment back on in a varying order, APC offers the Masterswitch and Switched Rack PDU products. A couple of units you may want to take a look at are the AP9225 or the AP7900. Both of these units have 8 total outlets. These units also have embedded Network Management Cards which allow you to remotely reboot individual outlets, while also allowing for you to configure a delayed turn on for each outlet, in the event that the PDU has its power cycled.

I just want to be sure, by power management of the servers...you are talking about the Windows option or is there an option in the APC Network management card or Powerchute?

Also, if you are talking about the Windows Power Management...what option should I use?

(I am kinda new to this so I am having some difficulties setting things up)
