Hi all,
Since there is no timetable for Windows 2008 support for the Powerchute software; how is everyone handling clean shutdowns and what not for Server 2008?
I can't be the only one running 2008 and wanting to have my servers shutdown automatically in case power is out long than the UPS' battery can I?
Thanks for any tips/advice.
Tom Wilson

PCBE 8.0 supports windows 2008. make sure you dont have any other powerchute versions installed of business edition (even if you tried an earlier version) or if you have powerchute network shutdown installed.
are you just installing the single node agents? or either one of the deluxe versions?
can you specify the issues you are having or do you have any screen shots of error messages?
let me know.

I've tried installed PowerChute 8 Business Edition on Windows Server 2008 Std edition 32bit and 64bit, the agent installs OK but the server install gives this error:

yes this definitely should work.
are you installing this from a CD or via a download from apc.com? i googled this message and came across a couple of difference scenarios where this has come up. i've never personally seen it before.

What version of the software did you use? I have my BackUPS 1000 plugged in with the supplied USB/Serial cable and W2K8 won't install the proper driver for the cable. Makes it real hard to get the actual PowerChute software working.

As for right now, I can vouch that PowerChute Network Shutdown, PowerChute Server, and PowerChute Business Edition 8 are supporting Windows 2008. Back UPS use PowerChute Personal Edition which generally isnt supported in the server operating systems due to the shutdown sequence requirement of server operating systems.
What model BackUPS and cable are you using? There is a cable that, depending on the model, may work with PowerChute Business Edition in simple signaling mode (UPS speaks to computer only).

How do I go about obtaining a copy of PowerChute Business Edition Basic v.8? I have Two Windows Server 2008 system, both are 64 bit, and I am lost without your Powerchute software.
I just bought a new Smart UPS 750 hoping it would include software supported by Windows Server 2008 but the CD that shipped with the battery was 991-2000Q - I believe it is ver 7

You mentioned that you are using Smart UPS. Not sure if you have NMC installed, if so, you can download PCNS 223 for windows server 2008 that is available download now.

Tom,
Although the software isn't officially supported yet does not mean that it will not work. Have you tried installing any of the supported windows version in Server 2008?
If the install goes without issue then I would recommend testing the shutdown to ensure the process goes smoothly.

Hi,
That is what I ended up doing and testing the shutdown. It shutdown the servers OK. Though it didn't bring them back up when power was restored. Not a show stopper at this point.
Thanks!
Tom

You might need to check your Bios settings.

I have 2008 standard, and the install went well, but it won't find the UPS (smartUPS1500). The system found and installed the driver just fine. The utility that scans for devices does not find my ups... anyone have any solutions? Is there a native solution with diminished functionality? I don't need logging, just safe shutdown when battery hits 15%!
Thanks

windows vista and 2008 no longer have serial UPS support..
with powerchute business edition, first of all you want to make sure you are using the correct cables - sua1500 requires 940-0024 or 940-1524 serial cable. you also have the option of USB with this.
you want to make sure that if you have used USB and then decide to try serial that the UPS circuitry is reset (brain-deaded) before you do that. when you even insert the cable to the USB and remove it, without using it, it kills the serial port till you reset the UPS.
to do that - you need to unplug the equipment, turn off the UPS, unplug it from the wall, and disconnect any comm cable. then hold down the off button (o) and hold it down until the front panel LEDs flash and you hear a click. then you can reconnect everything and proceed with serial communication.
you may not even need to do that if you are using the incorrect cables.
but can you provide anymore information with the cable part numbers?

Hi, Angela!
Could you please specify the edition of the PowerChute?
A customer is trying Business Edition v8.0.0 with Windows Server 2008 Enterprise Edition.
Even thought the apc.com says W2K8 is supported the APC software cannot be installed.
