PowerChute Network Shutdown for Synology NAS

Hello...  recently my company just purchased Synology NAS, and I think this device is great for putting UPS to sleep in case of power failure because the NAS is the last device to turn off, and it also draws very little power compared to other computer.

The problem is all of our Smart UPS are controlled by AP9619, and the Synology built in UPS function cannot turn off the UPS via UPS-SNMP mode.  Synology built in UPS function can turn off locally connected UPS (via USB port), but it is not viable in networked environment.

Could APC make PowerChute Network Shutdown for Synology DSM?

I think Synology users are quite much coupled with the fact that APC is the most commonly used UPS brand, so I think that the effort to make PCNS for DSM won't be wasted.

Latest DSM version is 5.2

Thank you for your attention.

Run the installer: sudo /pathtoinstaller/install.sh

Examining the install.sh file, it appears the Java runtime is needed. Did you manually install this on the Synology unit? The one I am working on does not ship with it installed by default.

EDIT: I just noticed a jre tar file there, so I bet the installer actually unzips it locally.

Hi,

I will send your request to the Product Manager. A network option you have now is to write a script PowerChute will run prior to OS shutdown that will command the Synology system down. Another option is to connect to the UPS via USB and use the built in shutdown option. You can have the Synology system connected to the UPS via USB while the other systems are communicating over the network.

Thank you,

You could try installing APCUPSd on your Synology NAS:

Hi,

At this time, we do not offer PowerChute for Synology NAS.

If the UPS is a Back-UPS or Smart-UPS you can connect the USB cable to the NAS and use the built-in shutdown interface to power down the NAS.

If the UPS is a Smart-UPS and has an NMC installed you can install PowerChute Network Shutdown on a compatible system and write a command file / script to power down the NAS.

I have installed PowerChute Network Shutdown 4.3.0 for linux on an RS2416+. It's working fine for me in combination with an AP9631 NMC card in the UPS. Seems to me your system should work too.

Here's what I did:

  1. Place the PCNS installer somewhere on the nas.
  2. Enabled SSH access.
  3. Access the NAS using SSH.
  4. Create a folder /etc/init.d
  5. Run the installer: sudo /pathtoinstaller/install.sh

Basically that's it. You probably need to configure the firewall.

After I ran sudo /pathtoinstaller/install.sh ssh returned:

Cannot find pcns430.tar.gz

Aborting with error code-15.

I can't think why as I can see pcns430.tar.gz in the folder alongside install.sh and there are no strange permissions on that directory that should mean ssh can see install.sh but not the pcns430 folder...

Please can someone help!
