Power on after shutdown

I have a question related to the power on behaviour of my UPS. I use an SURT1000XLI UPS with Network Management Card.

I would like to use my own software (which will send SNMP traps) and preferably not the Powerchute software. It is no problem to shut down the UPS (with or without delay) using an SNMP trap. If however the power returns after a power loss, the UPS will stay off(!)

Is there a way to always power on the UPS when the power returns?

What I would like to to:

1. Detect power loss by receiving an SNMP trap

2. Wait until the battery capacity is below a certain percentage

3. Send SNMP trap to the UPS to initiate a shutdown

4. If the power returns after the shutdown of the UPS, it should automatically power up and thus start my computer behind it.

The UPS should come back up. Most computers must be configured to turn back on when power is restored. I would confirm that your computer is configured to reboot up when power is restored.  This would usually be done in the BIOS.

Hi Stuart,

The UPS itself does not turn on. I have set the "Restart when power is restored" setting in the shutdown configuration of the NMC, but this is listed under "PowerChute Shutdown Parameters" so maybe not applicable when using SNMP traps? A manual push on the power button is needed to turn the device on again.

I would also check that your return delay is not set for a high number.  It may just be that when you trigger it to turn off via SNMP it is turning the unit off just like any normal power down and there is no context for the expectation to turn back on when power is restored.  Versus a powerchute shutdown which is done specifically in the case of an outage, etc.

Hey Jasper,

You should be able to do the same thing as PCNS using SNMP (and if not, let us know!). Like Stuart says, make sure you give the UPS enough time to turn back on based on shutdown parameters.

Also, are you using upsBasicControlConserveBattery (.1.3.6.1.4.1.318.1.1.1.6.1.1.0)? I ask because the UPS is slightly different from a computer -- the computer's decision to turn on does not depend on how it's turned off, but the UPS distinguishes between a command to turn off (does not turn back on) and one to turn off and then back on (called variously "Shutdown w/ AC restart", "Conserve Battery").

Thanks for leading me into the right direction! I noticed the upsAdvControlRebootShutdownUps trap (.1.3.6.1.4.1.318.1.1.1.6.2.2) which does exactly what I want.

It will go to sleep after configured Shutdown Delay which will power down the equipment and after some minutes (don't know where to configure that yet) it will power off the UPS. When the power returns, it switches on again.
