Power ON/OFF Loop on APC Smart-UPS

Hello,

I use an APC Smart-UPS (APC Smart-UPS RT 5000VA 208V Documentation - Manuals, Warranties, Brochures and More | APC) and i am having an issue with it. Each time i power on it starts a power on/off loop as you can see in the following video:

Any ideas to solve this issue?

I just measured the Battery voltages:

Battery 1: 41V ⎓

Battery 2: 39V ⎓

The UPS is attached to a Battery Pack (Buy APC Smart-UPS RT 192V Battery Pack - Technical Specifications and Information | APC) via 2 backwards ports. The battery pack voltages:

Port 1: 83V ⎓

Port 2: 84V ⎓

I left the batteries connected when the UPS was powered off.

Are these acceptable values? Would you please give a possible solution procedure?

PD: I double checked the Input AC Voltages and they are L-N not L-G.

Something for you to test. The voltages you got are very low for both the UPS and the external battery pack (EBP). It almost seems like the UPS is not actually charging the batteries and even if you install some new batteries the UPS might just destroy them. If the batteries in both the UPS and EBM are the original batteries they are most likely too far gone to be of any use, especially with the voltage shown.

Power the UPS off completely:

Unplug the batteries, both UPS and EBM.

Turn mains input off, the unit should then be completely powered down.

Test if any of the batteries are good to use:

The batteries in the UPS are no use what so ever at the moment so don't use them. Remove each battery pack for the unit and EBM and measure each individual battery packs. The individual pack voltage needs to be between 85 and 100Vdc (a combined voltage of 170-200Vdc) if it is below this you will not be able to use the battery for testing because you won't be able to power the unit on. If this is the case you can try and get a single RBC44 for testing (hopefully you have a service center that will allow you one for testing).

If you have some suitable batteries do the following:

Insert the 2 batteries into the unit (mains input power still off)

Press the ON button only once. If the batteries are still good and the unit working the internal fans will start up. If the fans started its good sign and you can continue, if it didn't UPS might be fault or it could just be the batteries. Press OFF to turn the unit off.

Will give more steps if needed but give the top a try first

Do you have the serial number of this UPS? At least the first six characters on the back or bottom of the UPS? Something like IS0845 along with the specific model?

We don't typically repair these units in the US, just replace if under warranty. Thus, we don't provide service manuals, etc since your unit requires some type of repair potentially.

Although, the battery voltages are fairly low. Here is what you could try - try to take those ones from your XL battery pack at ~88V and replace them as the internal batteries (because they have the highest voltage) - see if you get any different behavior with those inside the UPS and disconnect the XL battery pack completely from the UPS.

While I don't think this issue is related to the batteries and their voltage, you could try it just to see. I also can't tell you to buy new batteries because there is the possibility that won't work and you would've wasted money on batteries.

Once I verify your warranty status, perhaps there are other options to repair this UPS.

Thank you for the video reference. What's happening on the front of the unit is most important.

Can you confirm on the right hand side, the battery bar graph, which LEDs are flickering or trying to turn on at least. To me, it looks like this (0 representing off, 1 being on)

Hello,

Unfortunately, i power off the UPS for a long period of time... Now, when i power it back on the UPS gives me no signals, it just does not power on. I checked the input voltages:

VL1 = 118V

VL2 = 121V

VL1-L2 = 220V

I guess that the battery bar graph was flickering with the pattern:

Hello,

The top two LEDs illuminated with the Red X fault indicator indicate a logic power supply fault. Did you leave the batteries connected when the UPS was powered off? Have you checked your battery voltage? I need to go and check to see if bad batteries would influence this logic power supply fault in any way. I will report back.

In further research, I don't believe faulty batteries could lead to this but rather a Logic Power Supply problem could cause bad batteries.
