Power Cabling in Data Center

Hi Folks,

May you help me out on this, Does somebody have any technical material whether from apc or any other manufacturer in which complete electrical cabling (how it can be done) is defined? Basically I am a mechanical engineer and dont have much clear vision about installation or how power cabling can be done in data centers. I wanna learn step by step e.g. input pdu to ups and output pdu to racks etc..... cable routing steps and the usage and differences of pdu, power panel, db's etc...

If somebody can provide me any link, whitepaper, tech.literature, book or video tutorial(most wanted) then i'll much appreciate.

Regards,

War

Sorry however there are just way to many options here still. It is like asking for a step by step guide of designing cooling and I want to cooling in Tons. There are a lots of different ways to get that.

This is a hard question to answer because it depends on your incoming power (208V, 480V, etc), how much power you need (kW, MW, etc) and what type of equipment you want to power (DC). There are many other factors like efficiency and reliability. All which need to be balanced to your budget. Do you want metered power strips or is that a luxury you can't afford.

I am sure there are white papers out there on each topic however I recommend you find yourself an Electrical Engineer that understands Data Centers who can sit down with your and discuss options to meet your requirements.

There are so many options out there. Maybe if you provide a little more information about your site, I can help narrow down the options and tailor something to your needs. Or hopefully someone can prove me wrong and we can both learn from this!

Regards,

J

Dear J. Smith,

Thanks for your reply, here are the details,

Incoming power is 420-480V, and power would be needed in kW. As far as equipments are concerned I would like to power up the ups's, pdu's, cooling units, and racks.

My main concern is to understand the cabling routing and installation. I wanna learn how  we place cables from main feeder > DB>UPS>Output DB>Racks. You see, often we place power panels and switch gear (i wanna learn, how i know that now the power panel is required) etc.

I want to have grip on it. Hope soundecided

Regards,

War
